Overview

Clark Gable is "Big John" and Spencer Tracy is "Square John"; both "Johns" seek their fortunes in the Texas oil fields. They simultaneously fall in love with Claudette Colbert, but it's "Big John" who wins out. When both Johns grow rich on oil, "Big John" lets money go to his head, and he begins neglecting wife Colbert for Hedy Lamarr, the "been around" companion of businessman Lionel Atwill. "Square John," who still carries a torch for Colbert but doesn't want to see her heart broken, tries to buy off Lamarr; when this fails, he decides to ruin "Big John" financially. But when "Big John" is charged with violating anti-trust rules by the crooked Atwill, "Square John" rushes to the side of his old pal. Both men end up where they started--broke but happy. "Big John" returns to faithful Colbert, while "Square John" stands by with an ear-to-ear grin. Boom Town was the last film to co-star Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy; though Tracy was fond of Gable, he resented playing "eunuch" in their on-screen romantic triangles. Claudette Colbert's scenes with Clark Gable are pleasant enough, but the sparks that had ignited their scenes in It Happened One Night are largely absent here.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Before Elvis was even born, another man was dubbed “the King,” and during his two-decade reign as Hollywood’s most popular male star, Clark Gable was the jewel in the crown of his home studio, M-G-M. Six of his most popular films are included in this handsomely packaged box set. In Dancing Lady (1933), Gable plays a tough taskmaster to an up-and-coming stage star (Joan Crawford, accompanied for one dance number by Fred Astaire in his debut role). China Seas (1935) finds Gable heading an all-star cast -- including Jean Harlow, Wallace Beery, Rosalind Russell, Lewis Stone, and Robert Benchley -- in a tense drama involving modern-day piracy aboard a Singapore-bound ocean liner. San Francisco (1936), arguably the gem of the box, teams Gable with Spencer Tracy and Jeanette MacDonald in a fanciful tale of Barbary Coast intrigue climaxing with an elaborate representation of the devastating 1906 earthquake. Harlow was back in Wife vs. Secretary (also 1936), a frothy trifle that exhibits Gable’s facility for comedy. He trades barbs with Spencer Tracy again in Boom Town (1940), a fast-moving yarn about oil wildcatters, with Claudette Colbert as the woman who comes between them. Over a decade later, Gable maintained his leading man status. Mogambo (1953) is actually a remake of his 1932 hit Red Dust, with sultry Ava Gardner taking the role played earlier by Jean Harlow. Arguably the last of his truly classic movies, this John Ford-directed opus spotlights an older but no less charismatic Gable at his virile best.

I purchased this Clark Gable boxed set because it included China Seas, a film I watched years ago and enjoyed very much. I was extremely pleased with the other films included in the set namely because of Gable's chemistry with his co-stars. His acting is superb. He can play any man. Rough or smooth Gable is always good. It doesn't take long to realize why he was nicknamed the King of Hollywood. One nice touch is a profile of his life and career which includes interviews with his children. If you like romantic comedies with a little danger and drama thrown in the mix you will enjoy all the films in this set. It is a must-have for fans.
