Overview

In 1977, a little-known singer and actor with the unlikely name of Meat Loaf released a record called Bat out of Hell, and against all odds it became one of the biggest-selling albums of all time, elevating the former Marvin Lee Aday to rock superstardom. This documentary, produced for the VH1 "Classic Albums" series, incorporated interviews and performance footage to show how Meat Loaf and his collaborators -- including songwriter Jim Steinman, producer Todd Rundgren, and vocalists Ellen Foley and Karla DeVito -- helped to craft a 30-million selling blockbuster. Songs include "Two out of Three Ain't Bad," "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," and "Bat out of Hell."

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Sharon Steinbach
One of the top-five selling albums of all time with more than 30 million copies sold, Meat Loaf Bat Out of Hell is fertile material for a making-of documentary. And this celebration of the 1978 classic does not disappoint. Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell, with its unique operatic narrative, was a rich pastiche of '70s pop and progressive rock styles, and one rejected by most record executives. This tape tells how Meat Loaf, composer Jim Steinman, and producer Todd Rundgren finally found the one executive who got their big idea. The rest is history; which is told here by Loaf, Steinman, Rundgren, and backing vocalists Ellen Foley and Karla De Vito, among others. Present-day interviews are mixed with archive footage, including vintage live performances of "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)," "Heaven Can Wait," and "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad." Tracing the creation and success of every song, Bat Out of Hell is equal parts enlightening and entertaining.
All Movie Guide
The stories behind famous rock and roll albums often tend to be as fascinating as the albums themselves, especially when the album in question is off the beaten path. Bat Out Of Hell is perfect example of this phenomenon and fans will be happy to know that Classic Albums: Meat Loaf -- Bat Out Of Hell tells the album's strange story in all its bizarre, operatic glory. This interview-driven documentary features input from many of the musicians involved in the making of Bat Out Of Hell but the focus is on songwriter Jim Steinman, producer Todd Rundgren and, of course, vocalist Meat Loaf. Each is a natural storyteller and gifted with a good sense of humor so the album's story flows forth in a natural, engaging manner. It's particularly interesting to see each member of this trio breaking down their techniques and inspiration, particularly the moments when the layers of different songs are picked apart at the mixing board. Director Jim Smeaton organizes the material well, giving it a snazzy pace and intercutting the talking-head footage with footage from vintage promo and performance clips to add some extra visual flair. It also helps that the music from Bat Out Of Hell is ever present on the soundtrack, setting the proper mood in the background. All in all, Classic Albums: Meat Loaf -- Bat Out Of Hell is an excellent documentary that is guaranteed to please fans while conveying the excitement of Bat Out Of Hell for novices. It's a must for students rock & roll excess.
