Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Fans of vintage Hollywood movies, your prayers have been answered! This deluxe box set collects six of the best comedies released during the ‘30s and ‘40s. It will be a particular boon to Katharine Hepburn devotees, as she is represented in three of the films. Stage Door, the rollicking 1937 film version of the George S. Kaufman-Edna Ferber play about aspiring actresses living in a theatrical boardinghouse, teams Hepburn with Ginger Rogers and several stars-to-be: Lucille Ball, Ann Miller, and Eve Arden. Bringing Up Baby 1938, to some historians the definitive screwball comedy, pairs Kate with Cary Grant under the direction of Howard Hawks. The Philadelphia Story 1940 reunites Grant and Hepburn -- here playing spoiled heiress Tracy Lord -- and tosses in Jimmy Stewart for good measure; George Cukor directs. Dinner at Eight 1933, another Kaufman-Ferber adaptation, benefits from superb scripting and features a slew of M-G-M’s top stars, including John Barrymore, Wallace Beery, and the screen’s original “blonde bombshell,” Jean Harlow. She also costars in Libeled Lady 1936, a delightfully daffy romp, with Spencer Tracy as a scheming newspaperman who uses ex-reporter William Powell to double-cross hot-tempered heiress Myrna Loy. Rounding out the set is To Be or Not to Be 1942, a black comedy that rather surprisingly set in Nazi-occupied Poland, with Jack Benny utterly hilarious as an egotistical actor recruited by the Polish underground. Each one of these movies is a knockout, guaranteed to provide laughs no matter how many times it's viewed.
