Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This five-disc box set collects a quintet of outstanding movie musicals adapted from Broadway hits. The Band Wagon 1953 stars Fred Astaire as a faded film star who tries his luck on the stage. Sophisticated and sassy, it includes such famous tunes as “Dancing in the Dark” and “That’s Entertainment,” with Cyd Charisse, Jack Buchanan, and Oscar Levant providing first-rate support for Astaire. Charisse also appears in Brigadoon 1954, Vincente Minnelli’s opulent celluloid version of the Lerner-and-Loewe stage play about a magical Scottish village that’s visible to outsiders only one day every hundred years. Gene Kelly and Van Johnson portray Americans who happen upon the town in this charming musical fable. Bells Are Ringing 1960, a bouncy adaptation of the Betty Comden/Adolph Green/Jule Styne smash, stars Judy Holliday as a telephone answering service operator who falls in love with a man Dean Martin she only knows as a voice on the wire. The hit songs include “Just in Time” and “The Party’s Over,” and the uniquely charming Holliday sparkles throughout. Easter Parade 1948, built around the music of Irving Berlin, has more scope than usual for this kind of picture; it follows the ups and downs of troupers Fred Astaire and Judy Garland over a period of several years. There are more top Berlin tunes than we can name here, but the highlights include “Steppin’ Out with My Baby,” “Shaking the Blues Away,” and the delightful Astaire-Garland duet “We’re a Couple of Swells.” Finian’s Rainbow 1968 -- Astaire’s last screen musical -- is a whimsical yarn about a mischievous Irishman Astaire who swipes a leprechaun’s pot of gold, only to have the little fellow follow him to the American South, where he’d planned to plant it. Francis Ford Coppola directs elegantly, and supporting players Petula Clark and Tommy Steele make engaging foils for the veteran hoofer.
