Clear and Present Danger

( 8 )

Overview

Clear and Present Danger was a problematic laserdisc, this reviewer going through three copies to find one without defects on one side or another. The DVD avoids those problems and is a very clean presentation, with a good clear image and beautifully mixed and balanced sound, which even allows one to appreciate (through TV speakers) the subtle use of a portion of Khachaturian's Gayane ballet in one scene. There is a language selection, subtitles if one wants them, and a trailer, but no other special features. ...

Coupled with the somewhat high list price, the purchase is a bit of a stretch given the absence of any bonus features. On the other hand, the movie is a good thriller, successfully linking action spread across an entire hemisphere, and utilizing superb stunt work and second-unit shooting featuring combat planes, cruise missiles, aircraft careers, Coast Guard cutters, and lots and lots of close-quarter fighting. All of this action takes place between the games of turnabout and deceit played around Harrison Ford's acting CIA director, Jack Ryan, and the various White House functionaries, right up to Donald Moffat's somewhat incompetent President (who resembles George Bush). The story, involving an escalating war between the United States and a Colombian drug cartel responsible for the murder of a friend of the President, is more complex than most yarns of this kind and more serious, although it's also a good deal stripped down from author Tom Clancy's original work. Clancy, incidentally, didn't like this movie or Harrison Ford's portrayal of Jack Ryan. His performance seems fine to this reviewer, and Willem Dafoe, Harris Yulin, Anne Archer, and others are superb. Sharp-eyed viewers will also spot Benjamin Bratt in a good supporting role.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Michael Costello
Phillip Noyce directs the third entry in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series, a reasonably entertaining techno-thriller for those capable of untangling the plot. Harrison Ford once again stars as the CIA analyst, who here is both elevated to director of intelligence and forced to turn operative when he uncovers a questionable presidential directive regarding a Colombian drug lord. Clancy's right-wing fantasy world has been given a slight twist to the left here at Ford's behest, and one guesses that liberal writer Steve Zaillian and Genghis Khan-worshipper John Milius worked separately. Presumably based on some of William Casey's more lunatic schemes while head of the CIA, the film is a festival of double-crosses and backstabbing in the corridors of power, and throbbing action scenes in the Colombian jungle as the superhuman protagonist tries to save the surviving troops from a blown clandestine operation. Noyce keeps things moving at a steady clip, and does a fine job with the complex action sequences, but there are few surprises here beside the script's criticism of unauthorized covert operations. Despite the cardboard nature of the characters, the distinguished cast, which includes James Earl Jones, Willem Dafoe, Harris Yulin, Donald Moffat, and Henry Czerny, adds to the film's quality.

    The quintessential political action thriller

I am not necessarily recommending this movie to anyone other than to mention that the casting and awesome cinematography i.e. scenery was memorable.

    Good Action Flick

I liked it when Jack Ryan got all pissed off with the Reagen-like President in this. If only that happened in real life. Besides that point, this was a good action flick through and through. The type when you've had a bad day and want to watch bad people get whacked. Not englightening TV.
