Overview

Broken Lizard's hilarious but little-seen ode to the slasher genre, Club Dread is presented here in its original theatrical edition thanks to 20th Century Fox Home Video. Just as Super Troopers exploded when it hit the stores and rental chains, so should this one, even if this first release isn't really something to write home about. Headlining the disc are two commentaries from the acclaimed comedy troupe, with director Jay Chandrasekhar and Erik Stolhanske chairing the first, while Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, and Paul Soter crack wise on the latter. Aside from those, there's a soundtrack spot and very little else to sink your teeth into. Admittedly, the two tracks are quite funny, promising better things to come from the boys in the future (at the time of the recording, they had five different scripts in development). As great as the commentaries are, they do raise a few eyebrows about this DVD release. First off, where are all of the cut scenes and that other subplot about the police officers to which they constantly refer? (Note: See the Unrated edition for those!) Also, wouldn't it be nice to have a gallery of Coconut Pete albums, with the corresponding songs such as "Naughty Cow" included? Who wouldn't want that? Sadly, the trailer was passed over on this edition in favor of insertion on the Unrated release. The inclusion of both the full-screen and anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen versions is nice, with both featuring splendid transfers along with a fine 5.1 Dolby Surround sound option. While it's true that at least the disc isn't bare bones, the sad fact is that the studio saved the good stuff for future editions down the road. Still, the genius of this kind of comedy lies in repeat viewings and that's really where this DVD or any other release for that matter is going to deliver. It's nice to have the extras, but it's even sweeter to be able to bask in the original theatrical genius that is the Pac-Man drinking game or virtually any scene that features Bill Paxton over and over again.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jason Buchanan
Occupying a strange, near superfluous celluloid limbo somewhere between Club Paradise (1986) and Friday the 13th (1980), Broken Lizard's Club Dread does offer some moments of inspired insanity despite the filmmakers' failure to even out the script and pacing problems that plagued the group's breakthrough comedy Super Troopers. The laughs certainly flow more frequently here, but perhaps as a result, they seem so diluted that they lose the unhinged punchiness that made the best moments of Super Troopers so hilarious. Though it does sustain the loose, easygoing aesthetic of the aforementioned sleeper hit, the comedy troupe's third feature (counting their little-seen first outing Puddle Cruiser) also suffers by aiming at a target that's already been fired upon a few too many times; it certainly would have been more effective had it been released among such early '80s slasher parodies as Student Bodies (1981) and Pandemonium (1982). Delayed reaction arguments aside, Club Dread does -- when all is said and done -- mirror the stalk-and-slash efforts of yesteryear down to the most minute details, and the supernaturally-charged killer of Club Dread is on-target for the genre even if the film itself does come a few decades too late. It's obvious from many of the ideas here that Broken Lizard is truly a creative and inspired bunch (a few inventive kills even offer some unexpectedly tense moments); it just would have been nice to see them set their undeniably able sights on a cinematic trend that hadn't already been so well-tread.

    Not worth the time

This is a very poor movie. I expected better from the people that made Super Troopers.

    Club Dread: A Hilarious Nightmare

This movie had it all; suspense, comedy, horror, and drama. It featured a motley crew of characters all with unique stories to tell. Its charming stupidity was perfectly portrayed, inspiring me to give it all five stars.
