( 4 )

Overview

MGM's third follow-up to its landmark Broadway Melody is short on story, but that's okay, since the plot is merely a clothesline upon which to hang sleek and opulent musical production numbers by Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell -- particularly a breathless and eye-popping gloriously black-and-white six-minute tap dance finale between Astaire and Powell to Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine." The tale itself is a typical backstage contrivance: Johnny Brett Fred Astaire and King Shaw George Murphy are a couple of ...

The tale itself is a typical backstage contrivance: Johnny Brett Fred Astaire and King Shaw George Murphy are a couple of hoofers working in a dance hall for peanuts. Due to mistaken identity, King gets tapped for the lead in a Broadway show opposite big star Clare Bennett Eleanor Powell rather than Johnny. But when King drowns his trouble in booze on opening night, Johnny covers for him, taking his place in the show.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
The lyrical levity and silky smooth syncopations of songwriter Cole Porter connect these five classic films from MGM's golden age. The first film here, Broadway Melody of 1940, features the super-suave tandem of Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell and is the collection's sole black-and-white entry. Next up comes 1953's Kiss Me Kate, a roaring take on William Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew featuring Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson. Shot in 3-D and boasting not only the show-stopping "Brush Up Your Shakespeare," performed by James Whitmore and Keenan Wynn, but a wonderful young dancer named Bob Fosse. The other standout in the collection is High Society, Porter's 1956 musical take on The Philadelphia Story, which casts Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra in the roles originally played by Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart. Although it does not hold up well against the original, the music -- and Louis Armstrong's presence -- make it a classic in its own right. 1957's Les Girls represents Porter's take on Akira Kurosawa's classic Rashomon, as Mitzi Gaynor, Taina Elg, and Kay Kendall recount their widely divergent impressions of their history as a cabaret trio, and Gene Kelly chimes in with yet another version of the events. Another 1957 favorite, Silk Stockings, closes the set. Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse star in this variation on the Ernst Lubitsch-Greta Garbo classic Ninotchka, a typically euphonic Porter delight with a Cold War subtext to beat the band!
