Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Bill Pearis
As the most popular installment in NBC's rotating Sunday night Mystery Movie series -- which also included McCloud and McMillan and Wife -- Columbo, in its second season, stuck with the formula that made it an instant hit. The audience witnesses a murder in each week's opening scene, and over the course of the episode, we watch as the culprit's seemingly airtight alibi gets picked apart by Peter Falk's rumpled, cigar-chomping detective. Only the celebrity guest stars were new. In the season premiere, "Etude in Black," John Cassavetes plays an orchestra conductor who kills his pianist lover when she threatens to reveal their affair to his wife. The episode is also notable for the first appearance of Columbo's beloved pet basset hound, who would figure into the plots of future episodes. Elsewhere in Season 2: The owner of a pro football team Dean Stockwell turns up dead in his swimming pool in "The Most Crucial Game," and Columbo suspects the team's general manager Robert Culp; Columbo ends up doing some pro-bono detective work on his London vacation in "Dagger of the Mind," starring veteran Brit actors Richard Baseheart and Bernard Fox not to mention Pussy Galore herself, Honor Blackman; The Manchurian Candidate's Laurence Harvey shines as a neurotic chess champion whose jealousy of a top Soviet player leads to murder; and Leonard Nimoy stars as an egotistical heart surgeon who betrays the Hippocratic Oath in "A Stitch in Crime" -- a case Columbo solves with Vulcan-like logic. Just one more thing: The very funny Season 2 finale, "Double Shock," breaks from the Columbo formula, keeping viewers in the dark as to the identity of the real killer until the very end.

Picks up where the first season ends.....the most, classic detective series of all-time. One episode in particular, Etude in Black starring John Cassavetes, Myrna Loy and Blythe Danner, is one of the finest in the entire Columbo series.
