Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
As Combat! marched into television history, it was Vic Morrow as hard-bitten, war-weary Sgt. Saunders who got the lion's share of the glory. But let's take a moment to salute his top-billed costar, Rick Jason, who portrays Lt. Gil Hanly, the leader of King Company. This second and concluding set of episodes from the distinguished World War II drama's third season includes one of Jason's best. In "Cry in the Ruins" (directed by Morrow), Hanly and his men, under attack by a German squad, forge a wary truce with the enemy to help a desperate woman find her missing baby amid the rubble. Several of the episodes dramatize compelling moral dilemmas that test King Company's sense of human dignity. In "Heritage," guest star Charles Bronson is solid as an artist who cannot bring himself to destroy priceless art treasures discovered in a German vault. In "The Tree of Moray," Hanly must protect a French Nazi collaborator from being lynched (guest star Robert Loggia leads the cry for justice). In "Beneath the Ashes," Hanly delays informing one of his squad members that his wife may be dying. As for Morrow, he continued to command attention with such benchmark episodes as "Odyssey," in which Saunders, behind enemy lines, passes himself off as a shell-shocked German as he makes his way back. Also on the guest-star front, James Whitmore is superb as a German masquerading as a village priest while plotting to blow up a strategic bridge in "The Cossack." Frank "The Riddler" Gorshin appears as a claustrophobic soldier who must commandeer an abandoned German tank in "The Hell Machine." Devoted Combat! viewers will want to sign up for another tour of duty with this classic series.
