Overview

While John Lennon may have been one of Liverpool's most famous sons, New York was the city he called home in the last ten years of his life, and he often spoke of his love for the Big Apple. Lennon was also a man who wrote eloquently about loss, pain, and the importance of overcoming adversity, and in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, a group of musicians and actors came together to perform Lennon's songs to honor his spirit, as well as to raise needed funs to support relief efforts related to 9-11. Hosted by Kevin Spacey, Come Together: A Night for John Lennon's Words & Music includes performances by Yoko Ono, Dave Matthews, Nelly Furtado, Alanis Morissette, Lou Reed, Moby, Marc Anthony, The Isley Bothers, and more, as well as readings from Dustin Hoffman, James Gandolfini, Kevin Bacon, Edie Falco, Leelee Sobieski, Tim Roth, and Steve Buscemi.

On Oct. 2, 2001, a concert was held at Radio City Music Hall as a way to help New York City heal in the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Now, that concert is available in a full-length and well-produced DVD released by Pioneer. With any multi-artist, marathon-length benefit concert, the results inevitably prove to be a mix of stunning highlights, as well as curious lows. Such is the case with ¿Come Together: A Night For John Lennon¿s Words & Music,¿ although the number of gems is high considering the daunting task of covering material by John Lennon. A trio of well-matched talents, Moby, Sean Lennon and Rufus Wainwright, renders ¿Across the Universe¿ gorgeous. Lennon¿s blistering, hard rock side is only visited once, with Stone Temple Pilots covering the Fab Four¿s ¿Revolution¿ with the kind of ferocity required to recapture the spirit of the original. And Dave Matthews brings a hushed and melancholic beauty to ¿In My Life.¿ The biggest surprise? Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Spacey sings ¿Mind Games¿ with the kind of celebrative bombast that Lennon used in the shimmering original studio recording, but sadly never had the chance to demonstrate live. Other performers on the release include Marc Anthony (¿Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds¿), Shelby Lynne (¿Mother¿), Natalie Merchant (¿Nowhere Man¿) and Nelly Furtado & Dave Stewart (¿Instant Karma¿), Cyndi Lauper (¿Strawberry Fields Forever¿) and Lou Reed (¿Jealous Guy¿). Although there are no DVD extras, the excellent picture and sound quality of the history-capturing release make the concert a worthwhile one for fans of any of the performers featured on the disc. Interviews and introductions from Yoko Ono, Kevin Bacon, Dustin Hoffman and Tim Roth are also of interest.
