While they may have been controversial upon initial release, these films challenged the status quo and laid the groundwork for other daring filmmakers who refuse to waver from their vision. Though they may not be as "controversial" today as they were when originally released, these films still hold all the power to move audiences that they did when they first saw the light of the projector bulb.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The Controversial Classics Collection is a positively triumphant celebration of cinematic power, with seven films that remain provocative decades after they first stirred theatergoers. Advise & Consent 1962 seems especially timely in its portrayal of a Congress bitterly divided along partisan lines by a presidential nomination. Demagogy and character assassination are nothing new, as you’ll see in this riveting drama starring Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton, and Walter Pidgeon. The Americanization of Emily 1964, which stars Julie Andrews, unfolds against a backdrop of intrigue within the U. S. military, with Navy man James Garner playing the fall guy for a scheming admiral. Bad Day at Black Rock 1955 stars Spencer Tracy as a one-armed World War II veteran who uncovers bigotry in a small western town. Violence in inner-city schools is something else that’s not unique to our times, as shown powerfully in The Blackboard Jungle 1955, a hard-hitting drama that pits dedicated teacher Glenn Ford against juvenile delinquents led by Vic Morrow. Our celebrity culture takes some hard knocks in A Face in the Crowd 1957, which finds personable hick Andy Griffith being made into a star -- with an agenda of his own -- by cynical promoters. Fritz Lang’s Fury 1936, starring a young Spencer Tracy, is a powerful indictment of small-town prejudice and mob rule. And I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang 1932, based on a true story, one of the earliest “message” movies, exposes the brutal and corrupt conditions of Georgia’s penal system during the Depression years. Each of these movies is remarkable in its own right; together they comprise an extraordinarily powerful group of films, proving that even in its early years Hollywood was capable of providing more than escapist entertainment.
