Cool Hand Luke

( 20 )

Overview

Warner Brothers was one of the first major studios to hop on the DVD bandwagon, and all of the discs in their initial line of releases, including Cool Hand Luke, shared a common set of extra features that included nothing more than cast and crew filmographies, scene and language selection and, if viewers were lucky, the original theatrical trailer. If one can see past the basic lack of extras, Cool Hand Luke is still a disc well worth owning; the picture quality is superb and the color palette, though rather ...

If one can see past the basic lack of extras, Cool Hand Luke is still a disc well worth owning; the picture quality is superb and the color palette, though rather muted by today's standards, is bright and accurately reproduced. There is no 16 x 9 enhancement, but the 2.35:1 aspect ratio has been maintained to good effect. The soundtrack is only a one-track mono, but it is a full digital mono, so even though there are no surround capabilities, the dialogue is clear and there is a wide, well-defined range of tones from high to low. Cool Hand Luke is a classic film and one that will undoubtedly be the subject of a special edition at some point down the road, but for now it's a pleasure to be able to see it so competently (albeit simply) presented.

All Movie Guide
Paul Newman created one of the most indelible anti-authoritarian heroes in movie history with his dynamic portrayal of the title character in 1967's Cool Hand Luke. It's some of the best work of Newman's career, and he's ably backed by the excellent Strother Martin -- whose "What we've got here is a failure to communicate" speech took on a life of its own in popular culture -- and George Kennedy, who won an Oscar for the role of Dragline. Luke creates a rich portrait of prison life and the people on both sides of the corrections department. Co-writer Donn Pearce spent time on a chain gang for safe-cracking, and the work has an unmistakable authenticity. The story is ultimately about the senseless righteousness of authority, and about Luke, a man who manages to win even when he loses. The film would usher in a wave of unconventional heroes, from Bonnie and Clyde that same year to Jack Nicholson's McMurphy in 1975's One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.

    Cool Hand Luke

This is a movie that came out when I was young and went to see it at the drive in. Always wanted to see it later in life and I really enjoyed it

    A reviewer

Despite what he says about "The Silver Chalice", Newman has never made a bad movie. "Cool Hand Luke" is probably his best, with "Hombre" a VERY close second.

    Coolness with Purpose

Cool Hand Luke was the quintessential 60's movie of bravado and rebelliousness against "The System" even before it became a fade to riot. Made in the early 60's, Newman exudes charisma and yes coolness in an environment ripe for despair, which the warden and guards notices to Luke's dismay in the end, because inevitably you can't beat those in power, even if you speak truth to power.

EXAMPLE OF A WELL DONE FILM

Watched it in class. I admit I don't personally like movies I can't really relate to, but this film was suprisingly moving. the film making is so well done and I admire Stuart Rosenberg's filmmaking technique.

    Best Paul Newman movie

I loved this movie so much! I think it is the best Paul Newman movie. The acting is excellent. I personally think Paul Newman should have won the Oscar for this movie. He is one of my favorite actors of all time. This is a wonderful movie, and I recommend it to everyone.
