Overview

Jon Turteltaub's comic telling of the story behind the Jamaican bobsledding team, Cool Runnings comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. There are neither subtitles nor closed captions on this release. Supplemental materials include the theatrical trailer. This Disney/Buena Vista title does a fine job of presenting the film, but offers little else. Fans of the film will enjoy the disc, but there may not be enough here to interest others.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Karl Williams
Cool Runnings is a likable sports comedy that manages the unusual task of being both heavily cliched and highly offbeat. In terms of storytelling and structure, director Jon Turteltaub relies on tried-and-true cinematic sports conceits: underdog athletes, not taken seriously, become worthy competitors due to heart, grit, and determination, egged on by a coach in whom nobody believes anymore. It's been done to death, but Turteltaub understands that the formula works, just as it did in Rocky (1976), The Bad News Bears (1976), The Natural (1984) , and any one of two dozen other sports films. What sets the film apart is its sly self-awareness. The casting of the absurdly out of shape John Candy as the team's ex-champion-athlete coach, and the characters' goofball names (two teammates are Sanka Coffie and Yul Brenner) are just two examples of the film's wickedly juvenile, joyous sense of humor. The proceedings are handled with just such a delicately funny touch, the film's intentions not to be taken seriously made so clear that Cool Runnings (1993) becomes an instantly enjoyable confabulation.

This is one of my very favorite movies. It is pretty typical Disney in that if you look at all closely you can see the strings they are manipulating to get reactions from the audience. Despite this, I LOVE this movie. I have watched it many many times, and the final scene STILL brings tears to my eyes.

This movie makes me laugh and cry every time I see it. My 8 year old watches it all the time. He likes to imitate Sanka's jamaican accent (Ya Mon)

I think this is a great movie Sanka is the best like when the team gets in trouble for fighting and daresse is like ''You don't see the Swiss fightin and carrin on'' and Sanka goes ''Ah yes but you don't see the swiss smilin neither in fact if one of them swiss boys ever came across a pretty girl he'd probly say Ise Viy Dry and try to push her down some ice'' This movie is a number 1 I'd have to say one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. And even better is after every time some one asks Sanka if he is dead he goes ''Ya mon I'm dead''

I forgot just how good a movie this is. Used it to teach kids in my elementary class about the Winter Olympics and sticking to their goals. They loved it!

Great movie for rooting for the underdogs. This movie is funny but also shows what a person can achieve with determination and hard work.
