Overview

In this tense espionage drama set in 1942, William Holden plays Eric Erickson, an American-born Swede who is put on the Allied blacklist for trading oil with the Nazis. Collins (Hugh Griffith), a British intelligence agent, offers to expunge Erickson's name from the blacklist after the war in return for information on the Nazis. Erickson agrees to the plan and proceeds to make it look as if he is pro-Nazi. This subterfuge causes him to be branded a traitor, and his wife, believing Eric to be a Nazi, walks out on him. Nevertheless, Eric continues with his deceit and makes the Germans think that he is planning to construct an oil refinery in Sweden to serve as a fuel supply for Germany. As a result he is allowed entrance to four German oil refinery, and he passes on the information to Collins. But Eric is being put under surveillance by the Nazis. They discover that Eric's lover, Marianne (Lilli Palmer) is working for the Allies. Suddenly both Marianne and Eric are arrested and thrown into Moabit Prison -- with dire consequences for both of them.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Richard Gilliam
The Counterfeit Traitor is a top-grade studio film efficiently directed by George Seaton and boasting strong lead performances from William Holden and Lilli Palmer. A substantial asset to the film's realism is its primarily European supporting cast, including such distinctive performers as Klaus Kinski and Ernst Schröder. Also aiding the film is its rich, Technicolor look. Ironically, cinematographer Jean Bourgoin would receive an Oscar for his black & white photography of The Longest Day, released that same year. Based on a true story, the film opts not to explore the moral ambiguities of double agents who must help an enemy in order to accomplish their espionage tasks. Still, it is an entertaining, if old-fashioned spy yarn.

William Holden was never better in this WWII spy drama based on a true story. Lilli Palmer has one of her best roles as a devout Catholic who pretends to be a Nazi but really is working for the Allies because she is convinced Hitler is the anti-Christ. Great on location filming in Europe and wonderful character development. This is a 'sleeper' but was one of Holden's best films. Great supporting cast. The emphasis is not on shoot-ups but there is action. This film does a good job at recreating the horror of living under a totalitarian dictatorship with its power enforced by ruthless secret police with unlimited authority. One of the best lines is when a German businessman, a nationalist and basically a decent man, witnesses a strike by hungry workers. The SS arrive and start hanging the ringleaders. The German says 'you can hear about 1000 atrocities but you only have to see one.' This film made a conscious effort to show the sacrifices, humanity and courage of Europeans -including Germans- held captive in prison of Nazi Germany. The point of view of the film is very unusual. How many other films deal with the Swedish business deals with the Nazi's, the Dutch and the Anti-Nazi German resistence? Great spy story, great love story and wonderful performances. This a film about self-centered successful businssman who is transformed by the war. It is about man's quest for meaning. Anyone touched by Marianne's courage and deep Christian faith (as portrayed by Lilli Palmer) could never be the same. Highly recommended. After you see this READ MAN'S QUEST FOR MEANING and THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS.
