Overview

MGM has a done a fine job packaging this pair of Ingrid Pitt favorites in one tidy, generous package. Hammer Films fanatics will be especially delighted by the nice restoration jobs these films have been given: Both The Vampire Lovers and Countess Dracula look stunning, thanks to beautifully remastered video transfers that capture the carefully-composed gothic look of each film with an eye-popping amount of color and detail. Both of these often-edited films have also been restored to their original, uncut versions. Audio options are limited to the original mono tracks, but both sound quite robust, especially in their thunderous use of Harry Robinson's bombastic musical scores. In the area of extras, each film is given a commentary featuring Pitt and each film's writer and director. The Vampire Lovers commentary is a surprising disappointment; no one sounds terribly enthusiastic -- a shock given this film's strong cult reputation -- and they hedge questions about the film's racy content. The Countess Dracula commentary is much more interesting; everyone shows a great deal of enthusiasm for the finished product and director Peter Sasdy shares many fun anecdotes, the best being the tale of a funny mishap that occurred during a love scene. A trailer is also included for each film and The Vampire Lovers' side throws in a still gallery set to an audio recording of Pitt reading excerpts from Carmilla, the tale that inspired the film. All in all, this is an excellent package whose inspired pairing of films and generous supplements make it a steal at its budget-level price.
