Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
Everyone seems to have a one-track mind in the six first-season episodes of Coupling, the clever and overtly sex-obsessed BBC sitcom. The show's simple premise has six 30-somethings -- three guys and three girls -- spending most of their time hanging out together, which gives Coupling an obvious similarity to the long-running Friends, albeit with a more libidinous slant. The series' sexual themes are universal, but the details are often quite British, as in "The Cupboard of Patrick's Love," wherein the three male leads fantasize about the frequent screen nudity of the likes of Helen Mirren, Jenny Agutter, and Britt Ekland. British TV prides itself on the prominence of the writer-auteur, in this case Stephan Moffat, who pens all the episodes and receives top billing. And Moffat clearly succeeds in conjuring conversations about sex that ring true, as in "Inferno," which includes a quaint dinner-table discussion about the merits of porn versus erotica. But the most ingenious bits in Coupling revolve around simple phrases like "giggle loop," "sock gap," and "nudity buffer," the definition and discussion of which create an atmosphere more reminiscent of Seinfeld than of Friends. Ultimately, although the subject of sex is ever-present in Coupling, the shows aren't particularly sexy and don't really try to be. Comedy, not conjugation, is Coupling's game, and it plays it to the hilt.

    LOVE this show!

I was hooked after one episode when I first saw this show on BBC America in it's first season. The writing and cast are superb. You won't believe it's possible, but each episode is at least as funny as the one before, if not funnier.

The funniest when it comes to SEX!!!!

I love Coupling! It is the best of 2 of my favorite American shows-Sex and the City, and Friends. This is a comical look at relationships, sex, and love. These shows will make you laugh again and again. The episodes are hilarious and brillantly written, while shot in the most interesting ways. It's fun for everyone except children of course. Watch it with your girlfriends or a bunch a guys it's a fun look into the other sex's thought process...which isn't always so different from each other. If you don't fall in love with the characters then I will be fully surprised. It's an awesome group of characters as well as the actors that play them. Its just a great and entertaining show all around!

COUPLING BLOWS FRIENDS OUT OF THE WATER

I NEVER WATCHED FRIENDS,IM REAL GLAD I MISSED THE SHIP-TO ME IT SEEMED TOO DRAMATIC,TOO SENTIMENTAL,WHICH I NEVER LIKE.UNSENTIMENTAL IS EXACTLY WHAT I LIKE ABOUT COUPLING ,REALLY THERE IS NO COMPARISON-IT'S JUST MEDIA HYPE/PR TO HELP PUSH THE FACT NBC BOUGHT THE SERIES,WHICH SUCKS. COUPLING IS BRILLIANT,THE WHOLE CAST THEY JUST HAVE IT,thus the american version will be a pALE imitation -you can see that it's just that -in the promo's,NBC should have bought the existing show, why wouldn't americans watch a British comedy on prime time-anyway it's there loss. GINA IN PARTICULARLY CRACKS ME UP-EVERYTHING ABOUT THE CHARACTER IS HILARIOUS.LIKE I SAID ,ITS THE WHOLE CAST& CASTING DOES A FANTASTIC JOB WITH SECONDARY CHARACTERS.

    FUNNY AS HELL!

The single funniest television show I have EVER seen in my entire life. The comparison to 'Freinds' makes me sick. This show absolutly blows 'Freinds' out of the water! A MUST SEE!

a DVD to have on a deserted island

If you don't get BBC America, Coupling is THE reason to pay extra for it! I am such a big fan of this show. It's funny, smart, and oh so sexy; the characters and dialogue had me hooked from the 1st episode. And, let me say, it's NOT a ''British Friends.'' BBC can pull this kind of show off, and they do a great job of it. It's become my sitcom of choice.

    Perfect

This series is so amazingly fresh and funny, it hooks you from the moment it starts. This is not in the least ''a British 'Friends''' This show is much smarter, and funnier than Friends has ever been. I can't wait for the next season to begin.

    Bravo, BBC!

After one episode you'll be hooked. You'll see your friends, your enemies and even a little of yourself in these shallow yet incredibly rich characters. And once more, bravo for the BBC.

Better than Friends, Better than Sex and the City

I found Coupling over a year ago after watching Ab Fab. ''The Melty Man Cometh'' from the second season is the episode that reeled me in, and I was thrilled to find that every episode was just as funny as the next. Much smarter than Friends and also like Sex and the City but with a hysterical and ridiculous male point of view. I'm frightened to see what the American censors will do to the perfect television show. Good luck to the American version actors-- you've got alot to live up to.

    Amazingly funny

OK, I admit to being a fan of British comedies ranging from Fawlty Towers and Mr. Bean to Red Dwarf and Men Behaving Badly. Coupling, however, is my current favorite. The situations start normally, but quickly get out of hand in absolutely hilarious ways. Poor Jeffrey, who can never talk to a woman in whom he is romantically interested without somehow blurting out something inappropriate, meets his perfect woman - she can't speak English. It turns out she is interested in going home with him, but through the broken communication somehow decides he is interested in the woman who accompanied her to the bar and, when she tries to discreetly meet him outside, he is broken hearted that she has left without him. In his mother's immortal words, ''Oh, Jeffrey!''

    Amazing show

This is a truely amazing show. I have seen the first season many times and, because I just got back from London, I know the forthcoming second season gets even better. If you like brit comedy or Friends this will surpass all expectations.

    A show to beat all

Jimmy Moffat, I am convinced is a genius. The show, is tear jerker funny, and not a soap opera. There is rumored to be an american version in the making, with at least the first show to be written my Jimmy Moffat. I'll hold my breath at any American trying to play Jeff and pull it off, good luck to the American cast. Definately, if you LIKE BRIT comedy, you've got to sit down for this one.
