Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Cree McCree
Forget the NBC knockoff of the same name, and pay no heed to the glib assertion that this is BBC's answer to Friends. Although it revolves around the lives of six thirtysomethings -- including one quasi-committed couple, Susan Sarah Alexander and Steve Jack Davenport -- Coupling is far racier, owing more to the Ab Fab antics of Edwina and Patsy than to Rachel and Ross. After spending Season 1 establishing the cast's neurotic but endearing quirks, self-delusions, and obsessions, series creator Steven Moffat really lets 'em loose in Season 2. When the taboo topic of self-pleasure rears its head, it's not done coyly as it was on Seinfeld but is allowed to erupt at a family dinner with Susan's parents, where Steve blurts out that seeing his right hand naked turns him on. Patrick experiences the opposite effect when he tries to bed longtime pal Sally, only to be visited by "The Melty Man" -- code for the Viagra-challenged. Moffatt studs the show with clever coinages like "VAA," which touts the joys of watching women sit down in skirts: "Visual Access Angle." But Coupling is more than just a collection of one-liners and double entendres. Despite constantly misunderstanding each other, these screwed-up singletons succeed in making us understand them, and they come off as more real than most of the people you see on reality shows.

Well, we no longer have to worry about NBC's pale attempt

The failure is over, NBC has cancelled their feeble attempt, and now we can all enjoy the original, truly hilarious, version of Coupling. Watching the pale US version just made me cry, break things, consider handguns as a viable.....never mind. Anyway, on to season 2. After establishing our sextet (not an inappropriate word considering the subject matter), we get even further exploration of our favourite characters, and twist and turn at every new neurosis, paradigm, and of course Jeff's 'valuable' life lessons. Moffatt takes us deeper into each character without sacrificing the humour or the surprising realism of the show as a whole. Yes, we all know people like this at our local; now you can acually pinpoint which character equates to each member of the group. Try it! The writing and acting, as usual, are top-notch, and comparisons to Friends can be ignored violently at this point. Please, these people can really act, and the words just flow so naturally you could mistake bits as improvisation. Is this the best season? Well, so far in the US, yes, unless you have BBC America or a good PBS outlet (forget WHYY Philadelphia, though). Just wait until Season 3, though.....I have an advanced copy, and it totally shreds the prior 2, with twists and turns alternately poignant, sad, and joyful. Get this, though, you will not regret a single penny.

    Funniest Show EVER!

I got hooked on this show watching BBC America and it quickly became my favorite show of all time. Unfortunately, the American copy didn't work, but this DVD is a must have in any comedy enthusiast's collection. The comparison to a cross between 'Friends' and 'Sex and the City' doesn't do it justice. Can't wait for Series 3 on DVD!

    Good stuff

Great show. Lots of belly laughs. A previous reviewer said to 'SKIP' the American version without having seen it, which is silly snobery. The American version is every bit as hilarious as the original. The plot lines are almost exactly the same, but with references to American culture and slang, which makes it a bit funnier because you don't have to devote part of your brain to translatation.

    Best Comedy Ever!

Watch one episode and you will be hooked! Nothing compares to Coupling, I am a HUGE fan of this comedy. Don't bother watching the American version, the original is a million times better!

    Very, Very, Very Funny

We first saw this series in England and made sure we were near a telly every Monday evening to see it. Laughed so hard we cried. Off color at times, but hysterical. I'll be the second one to buy it when it comes out,(after the other reviewer!)

    The Best Show Ever!

This is bar-none the best show I have ever watched. I've never seen an episode that didn't make me laugh none stop for it's duration. Forget the American version- American television consistantly ruin a good thing when they try to copy the British. Trust me- it will be a cheap imitation. Spend the money on the original. You won't regret it!

    Hilarious!

If it had not been for BBC America I would not have discovered one of the best comedies on television. I have seen every episode and this edgy, hilarious sitcom will leave you wanting more. Like other reviews, skip the U.S. knock-off that premiers this Fall and go for the original. Having seen the previews, there is no comparison between the two, except for the subject matter.

    can't wait for season 2!

Funniest show i have ever seen. Beats out ''Friends'' by a mile. America is realeasing it's own version of Coupling next season on TV- SKIP IT- This is the original, and will make you laugh non stop. I have seen most of these episodes on PBS, but still will be one of the first to buy the Complete 2nd season DVD.
