Overview

The Romeo and Juliet story has been modernized to a high school setting previously, but this romance from director John Stockwell turns the tale inside out. Jay Hernandez stars as Carlos Nunez, a poor but athletically gifted Latino teenager who endures a two-hour bus ride every day from East L.A. to attend the posh, wealthy Pacific Palisades High School in Los Angeles on a football scholarship. A straight-A student, Carlos is focused and driven, but his future is cast in doubt when he becomes the flirtation target of spoiled, self-destructive bad girl Nicole Oakley (Kirsten Dunst), who's the daughter of a prominent congressman (Bruce Davison). When his friends, family, and even Nicole's own father oppose the romance for Carlos' sake, he chooses to ignore their advice and stubbornly pursues his relationship with Nicole, whose feelings grow from simple physical attraction to something much deeper. Crazy/beautiful is directed by writer, actor, and director John Stockwell, who also penned the same year's Rock Star.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The enormously appealing Kirsten Dunst, probably the best of today's young Hollywood actresses, acquits herself handily in Crazy/beautiful, a sincere, thoughtful, and well-written teen romance. She plays the spoiled daughter of a prominent California congressman (the always superb Bruce Davison); a willful, self-destructive girl who masks her insecurity by treating life as one big party staged solely for her benefit. Relative screen newcomer Jay Hernandez, in his first leading role, registers solidly as the ambitious barrio boy whose chance encounter with Kirsten leads to romance -- a romance that threatens his future when her reckless behavior nearly costs him an appointment to Annapolis. Crazy/beautiful should not under any circumstances be mistaken for one of the innumerable crass, witless teen movies that have proliferated in recent years. Director John Stockwell (Under Cover), blessed with a meaty script and well-defined characters, brings out the best in his talented young leads; Dunst, in particular, has never been so achingly vulnerable on screen. The well-crafted situations have the ring of truth, and while the denouement might be a bit too pat, it's certainly not deleterious to the movie's overall effect. A teen movie with brains and heart, Crazy/beautiful is not likely to be soon forgotten by viewers of any age.
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman
Dunst, in her finest performance yet, has now transcended her fellow teen stars.
New York Post
Wonderfully unsentimental and smart. Jonathan Foreman

After years of turning out carbon copy 'teen flicks' this movie was wonderfully refreshing with lots of character and beautifuly done to draw the viewer into the experience. I recommend this movie as one of the best of for the past few years. The actors were very believable in their roles. I enjoyed every aspect of this movie with very few complaints.

I had an assignment in English class to find a movie like Romeo and Juliet and compare the two. When I first read the back of the movie cover for Crazy/beautiful, i saw that it compared it a lot to Romeo and Juliet. I immediatly rented the movie, and it was incrediable. The acting was great, and the movie was overall one of the best teen movies to come out in a while. A true classic storyline, and a wonderful present-day cast, make up one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

THIS MOVIE SHOULD BE SEEN BY ALL. IT WAS WELL WRITTEN AND THE ACTORS DID A GREAT JOB PLAYING THEIR PARTS. JAY HERNANDEZ SIZZLED ON SCREEN. HE WILL DEFINENTLY BE SEEN AGAIN.

This movie was a complete waste of time and money. It seemed very light, airy, and hollow. The movie lacked substance. Yes, there are two attractive lead actors, but what else was there? Very disappointed.

Hardly worthy of any attention, this movie is only getting my commentary because I am shocked at the overwhelmingly positive reviews it has had so far. Crazy/beautiful: it's stupid; it's predictable; it's wholly uninspired. The most entertaining thing that happened was at the painfully sappy climax, when someone behind me pretended to vomit and everyone in the theater started yelling ''shut up.'' I was laughing so hard I had to leave. Despite having missed the ending, I could tell you exactly what happened.

Crazy/Beautiful is the best romance Movie since ''Dirty Dancing.'' Both are about two opposites that MORE then ATTRACT, but share a certain bond. The love that Kirten and Jay's charactors show for eachother in the movie is breath taking. If you haven't seen it,you should. It's a beautiful movie and it made me cry. If you enjoyed Dirty Dancing, then this is the movie for you.
