Criminal Minds - The Complete First Season

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
If you can imagine a fusion of Law & Order, CSI, and Silence of the Lambs, you've pretty much got this suspenseful crime drama pegged. But Criminal Minds, while undeniably derivative of other TV shows and movies, synthesizes the best elements of its ostensible inspirations with élan. This spirited self-assurance, coupled with fine performances from a talented cast of prime-time B-listers, makes for a consistently entertaining series. It revolves around the investigators of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, an elite team of profilers charged with penetrating the twisted minds of perpetrators to establish patterns of thought and activity that will, hopefully, prevent future crimes. The BAU is headed by brilliant but prickly James Gideon (Mandy Patinkin), whose squad includes Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson), Elle Greenway (Lola Glaudini), and Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore). Their most gripping cases pit them against some truly deranged individuals, such as the paranoid schizophrenic who traps Elle, among others, on board a speeding passenger train in "Derailed." Occasionally, Gideon and his team try to ascertain innocence instead of guilt, as in "Riding the Lightning," in which Gideon believes that the distaff member of a couple on death row for murder may have not been implicated in the horrendous crime. Probably the best of the 22 Season 1 episodes is the finale, "The Fisher King," a real nail-biter that finds a psychopathic serial killer sending messages to vacationing BAU members, challenging them to prevent him from striking again. It's pretty strong stuff -- a description, by the way, that applies to most Criminal Minds installments.

    Great television

The first season of Criminal Minds is great viewing for anyone who likes CSI or Law and Order. Characters are well drawn and it always keeps you interested and guessing.

    more from this reviewer

If you liked CSI Las Vegas 7-8 years ago, when it was new and exciting, you'll love this series!

I stumbled upon this show about 2 months ago, it was on A&E after midnight. I was hooked from the very first episode I watched! I think the cast is put together well, unlike the other reviewer who called them "B-listers". The characters and their backgrounds/experiences/personalities, mesh together well as a team. They all bring something to the round table when discussing the profiles. The other nice thing is you don't have to know the history of the internal working of the team to watch any random episode. It's a great show. Catch it on CBS Wednesday nights or A&E Sunday nights. ION also plays reruns so check your local listings. I was lucky enough to find the first season for like $18.

    An Amazingly Smart Show

My wife and I began watching it together and really enjoy how the producers and writers challenge viewers to think as they are watching. I felt like this show forced me to think like the profilers in the show!

Has a lot of promise, but fails to deliver

I was initially drawn to "Criminal Minds" when it premiered on CBS because of two things. First, the promise of a new drama focusing on FBI profilers (largely overlooked in the recent trend of forensics-driven crime shows), and second, Mandy Patinkin in the lead role. I've loved this guy in "Princess Bride" and "Dead Like Me," so his presence alone got me to turn on my TV. The pilot ("Extreme Agressor") was taut, moody and cerebral and seemed like the start to a promising series. Sadly, "Criminal Minds" spent much of Season 1 not living up to its potential and virtually all of Season 2 becoming one of the worst shows on TV. I blame the supporting cast. While Patinkin is terrific as the introspective team leader and the young actor who plays Dr. Reid provides an unusual character, the rest of the cast might as well take up permanent residence in Blands-ville. To say these are "B-listers" as the Barnes and Noble review does is giving them way too much credit. Secondly, script quality tanks as the series goes on. The first half is alright, but episodes get ridiculous as the season progresses, and Season 2 increases the sillyness. Mandy Patinkin recently jumped ship, and I bet a lot of viewers will to. If you're a fan of psychological drama and mystery, I would recommend renting Discs 1 and 2. That's where you'll get the best crop of episodes without plunking down money for a set you won't want to revisit.

Fabulous Series - For Adults Only Though - Mandy Patinkin Rocks!

This is such a well-thought out series. Very well acted, incredible plots, and heart-stopping action. Plots are so much more involved than most shows on TV. Not an "easy" view like Law & Order - definitely more intellectually geared. These shows are NOT good for children and maybe not even teens. Some plots are so disturbing (especially the ones with children involved), that adults could be distressed. I read that that is why Mandy Patinkin left the show - because the material was really hard to handle emotionally. I have to say that I only tuned in originally because of Mandy Patinkin - I am a huge fan of his and would watch anything that he was in. I am still a Criminal Minds fan, but it was better when he was in it. I also love Penelope Garcia and Derek Morgan's characters. And Dr. Reid (Matthew Grey Gubler) is phenomenal. JJ and Hotch could leave the show and no one would even notice. Thomas Gibson plays such a boring part and he has NO personality on this show whatsoever. Whereas when he was on Chicago Hope with Mandy Patinkin, he played a fun-loving, irresponsible ER doc. Now he's just boring....unfortunately. Love the interplay between Garcia and Morgan as well. Great series.
