Overview

Multimillion-selling recording artist Britney Spears makes the transition to the big screen with this teen road trip romantic comedy, co-produced by the film branch of the entity that first brought her pop stardom, MTV. Crossroads casts Spears as Lucy, the shy valedictorian of her high school graduating class. On the night of their prom, Lucy and her once-close childhood friends -- the prim and proper Kit (Zoe Saldana) and the tomboyish, five-months-pregnant Mimi (Taryn Manning) -- reunite to dig up a time capsule they buried together as little girls. Mimi's about to make good on her childhood dreams; she's leaving their small Southern town for hopes of fame and fortune in Los Angeles. Though Lucy and Kit are reluctant to join her, they decide to tag along at the last minute, agreeing to be chauffeured by Mimi's just-out-of-jail friend, Ben (Anson Mount). As they trek across the country, plagued by car problems, unsanitary motels, and petty bickering, the three friends reveal meaningful secrets to each other, and Lucy begins to realize that the handsome, reticent Ben might just be the guy for her.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
Pop star Britney Spears sings and dances her way across America in her screen debut -- a coming-of-age drama designed as a showcase for the teen idol, whose famous midriff appears early and often. Directed by Tamra Davis (Gun Crazy), Crossroads stars Spears as a high school senior from Georgia who learns about life on a road trip west with her two best childhood girlfriends (Zoë Saldana and Taryn Manning). Along the way, she finds romance with the hunky ex-con (Anson Mount) who acts as the girls’ chauffer, raising the possibility that our perky heroine might lose her much-vaunted virginity. While Crossroads aspires to moments of straight-faced drama amid typical teen-comedy hijinks, it does provide its star with ample opportunities to appear in her underwear (once while dancing and lip-syncing to Madonna, no less!). Of course, Spears also does plenty of her own singing -- in one scene she lays waste to the competition in a karaoke bar contest, and later she triumphs at a Hollywood talent show. Crossroads is a Spears vehicle all the way -- sexy in a PG-13 sort of way and as streamlined as the vintage Buick convertible the girls travel across country in. Credit the talents of Saldana, Manning, and Mount, though, for helping to obscure this machine's various moving parts. They provide excellent support; and the catfights, sisterly bonding, and lustful moments that occur during the trip are convincing and effective. Add some big-sky scenery, and the result is a charming road film that's sure to please diehard Spears fans and perhaps even win her a few new ones.
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum
Britney has been delivered to the big screen safe and sound, the way we like our 20-year-old superstar girls to travel on the fame freeway.
Hollywood Reporter - David Hunter
Davis directs the low-budget production with economy and a lack of surface flashiness that is pleasingly unpretentious.
