Overview

In an adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos' novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Kathryn Merteuil Sarah Michelle Gellar and Sebastian Valmont Ryan Phillippe are step-brother and step-sister living in Manhattan. With their absent parents travelling in Europe, the wealthy pair have the family penthouse to themselves as they while away their summer break before beginning senior year at a private high school. Sebastian, bad-boy lothario, has apparently slept with all the girls in town and appears numb to it all. Kathryn, who appears to be the good girl class president, is actually far more amoral and malicious than Sebastian, but maintains appearances to the contrary. When she is dumped by her boyfriend, Court Reynolds Charlie O'Connell, for the innocent Cecile Caldwell Selma Blair, she schemes revenge by destroying Cecile's reputation. She challenges Sebastian to deflower Cecile and transform her into a tramp to humiliate Court. Sebastian isn't as interested as Cecile -- she's spent her whole life in a Catholic girl's school and presents no challenge. The girl who has caught his attention is Annette Hargrove Reese Witherspoon, the new headmaster's daughter. Annette had written an article for Seventeen Magazine on her plans to stay a virgin until she finds her one true love. Kathryn makes a wager. If Sebastian fails to lure Annette into bed before the summer is over, Kathryn gets his car. If he succeeds, Sebastian gets Kathryn, whom he wants anyway. Sebastian accepts the bet, but Annette turns out to be more than either of them bargained for.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jason Clark
A profane, wicked, barely believable but also oddly enjoyable teen variation on Dangerous Liaisons, Cruel Intentions is a truly guilty pleasure until it begins to take itself far too seriously. Writer/director Roger Kumble's take on this tale of decadence is light on subtlety, but takes the proceedings to a giddy limit, and adapts the story with more panache than it probably deserves in a setting so inherently shallow. The young cast is well-appointed, especially Sarah Michelle Gellar, who relishes the opportunity to play a bitch-goddess manipulator, though the drippy romantic angle of the story is far too melodramatic for a movie that delights in being so biting. The movie doesn't score many points for originality, but at least offers a bit more than the standard teenage picture, especially in its flagrant vulgarity, some of which is quite funny. A mid-size hit in theaters, the film has the dubious distinction of spawning a television series that never aired, the doomed-from-the-start Manchester Prep.

    Pompous and Immature

This adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons is but a pale imitation of both the book and the movies that preceded it: innundated with the pompous and immature acting of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Selma Blair, and Reese Witherspoon, one feels as if they're watching just another bland childish t.v. melodrama to the likes of 90210. First of all, Ryan Phillippe shows absolutely no talent in his role as Valmont. His theatric attempts at imitating John Malkovich's performance as Valmont is painful to watch if not laughable: a major disappointment from the onset of the movie. Why would one want to see a movie where the principal actor is vainly trying to imitate a greater actor who's still living? Please spare me the agony, I've seen better acting in obscure high school plays. I don't pay to see someone else failing their acting classes. The customs and manners in Les Liaison Dangereuses depict those of 18th century Europe because of the social conventions and institutions particular to that time (i.e. women's restricted roles and functions in society, the notion of honor and duels for the nobility, etc.) In this film, the juxtaposition of such artifices in a present day context makes absolutely no sense. The script thus comes out as nothing more than shallow and pretentious teenage snobbery. Changing the characters to an adolescent age reduces their motivations and actions to those of immature teenage twits with no sexual maturity and with their reproductive hormones on overdrive. Spare yourselves from watching immature actors perform miserably in this mediocre adaptation. You're not missing a thing by not seeing this farce of a movie.

    Cruel Intentions
This is a fun story that takes the audience into the world of rich, spoiled, sophisticated and manipulative young adults. It's unpredictable and has a great cast and soundtrack. I liked it.

    Cruel to View

The Cruel Intentions movie was an exercise in watching a suspense romance film turn into a terrible comedy, as it is just bad viewing. There is no sexual performances that there should have been, not even in the special features section. It shows that the teenage drama went down hill into hell after this film because Reese Witherspoon was too knowing and not naive enough for her role. It was just awful all around.

A Good movie but not perfection

This movie is definetly awesome in my mind. I think all people like to see wicked things we would never do and this movie had enough backstabbing to compete with Ancient Rome. There are many a devious plot and although it isn't 18th century like the other two version it encompasses the story/ theme very well. I suppose those very rich are bound by certain social codes although I hope not to this degree. For Catherine played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, it is being the perfect student and still being as reckless as everyone else. Sebastian (Ryan Phillipe) has a knack for attracting women, having them and then never calling again. It is only when Annette (Reese Witherspoon) becomes his next conquest that he discovers he is human and gains emotional attachment. It is a good movie with a good script although some of the acting isn't top notch. Definetly deserves its R rating with a lot of sexual inuendo as well as sex scenes. As a note to parents make sure your children don't see this movie until your prepared for a bird's and the bee's talk.

    Sexy, Dark, Seductive

Step siblings Kathryn Merteuil and Sebastian Valmont are a poisonous duo. Kathryn plays up to be a sweet, innocent, student body president in public, when infact she is sex craving, drug abusing and vindictive. Sebastian is known for bedding the entire female population of Manhattan and being proud of it, though he is only playing up to be what he really is. Sick of sleeping with 'incipid manhattan debutons', Sebastian craves for something a little more challenging. So he and Kathryn engage in a bet. Sebastian bets he can bed the virginal Annete(who also happens to be the new principal's daughter)before school starts. The odds: He fails and Kathryn gets his 1956 Jaguar roadster. He wins and he gets to bed the only person he can't have, Kathryn. Kathryn also plans a little something for herself. As part of her cruel plan to get back at her ex, Court Reynolds she needs Sebastian to bed Cecile. The girl Court dumped Kathryn for. The games begin. The only problem is not only does Annette not fall for Sebastian's Romeo act but Sebastian actually ends up falling in love with Annette to his own dismay. Unfortunately, Kathryn puts Sebastian's reputation on the line, knowing he has fallen for Annette. Sebastian goes to end things with Annette and tells her she was just a bet. Afterwards, Sebastian regrets what he has done and so gives Annette his most prized possesion, his journal. Will Annette fall for him again? Watch and find out. This film really struck a chord in me. It left me crying in the end but with a smidgen of hope at the same time. Ryan's character makes a smooth transition from bad guy to good guy and he carries it very well. Sarah stunned me playing Kathryn. It was hard to believe she is the same person who plays cute teeny bopper Buffy. This was definately Reese's best film yet. I felt that this film definately did justice to all of their acting skills. First time director Roger Kumble has done a brilliant job and most certainly deserves a pat on the back. The best adaptation of 'Les Liasons Dangereuses' yet. This film will stay in my mind as long as I live and I hope it will do the same for you.

''The Best Movie of all Time''

Creul Intentions has the same old bad girl, Bad guy. There is also a 2 goody-goody girls. And with out the Hottie(Ryan Phillippe) this movie wouldn't have been my favorite. There is some nudity in this movie but who said nudity is bad. Anyway I highly recommened this movie. ''The Best movie of all time''.

Not the most original, but worth watching nonetheless.

This was a great movie, somewhat similar to ''Great Expectations''. In fact, some of the lines were taken directly from it. I do reccomend watching this film, however, after reading the other reviews, i would highly advise you to attend school and learn how to spell before spending too much time on the TV.
