Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
After the conclusion of Babylon 5, creator J. Michael Straczynski sought to expand the program's universe with Crusade. Occurring in the timeline just after the B5 movie A Call to Arms, the short-lived series introduced Gary Cole as Capt. Matthew Gideon, the leader of an Earthforce team attempting to rescue the planet from a plague spread by the evil Drakh Carl Reggiado. Gideon's elite crew -- drawn from the Rangers, a group first seen on B5 -- included Tracy Scoggins as Capt. Elizabeth Lochley and future Lost denizen Daniel Dae Kim as Lt. John Matheson. Having originally conceived the show with a B5-styled five-year arc, Straczynski butted heads with TNT execs, who sought major changes to his scripts after only the first five episodes. Straczynski was unwilling to acquiesce, which resulted in Crusade being pulled from production after only 13 episodes were filmed. Fans can enjoy the complete series in this four-disc set, along with commentaries and a documentary.

    Colorful Storyline; Great Potential

Crusade is a nice spinoff of the Babylon-5 lore. It is unfortunate that Crusade only ran one year because many of the foundational elements (i.e., characters, backgground, theme and plot) proved to be very solid for building a very powerful series. The music is very haunting for me...at times reminding me of Forbidden Planet with a Techno twist. Clearly many B-5 fans loved the entire concept of a "Techno-Mage" and Straczynski develops this line in the series. Indeed, imagine King Arthur, the search for the Grail, thrown into a space exploration format with a ticking bomb on the timeline (that is, earth needs an antidote to a deadly plague). Albeit, a little rough around the costumes (different uniforms on different episodes) and a tight-in-space set for actors and blocking, it still is nice romp in the universe. The acting is solid and the writing is very good. In short, well worth adding to one's DVD library of great Sci-Fi stories and even more so if you are a Babylon-5 devotee.
