Great to watch and NOT Boring

This series really let's the intellectual side of any Monty Python fan run free. It shows that smart does not have to be dull. Hmmm....

    more from this reviewer

Crusades is an engaging, thorough, and (most importantly) entertaining series which sheds light on a controversial subject is world history.

The Crusading Movement is often misunderstood by modern observers of history. Indeed, in an age where tensions between West and East are growing, the Crusades are a controversial topic for discussion. "Crusades' recognizes that fact, but fortunately its makers didn't let seriousness or melodrama get in the way of making a good documentary.
This is a complete retelling of the events of the Crusades, providing historical context and a comprehensive narrative. Writer and host Terry Jones has found an excellent balance between serious historical commentary and humor, allowing the audience to take in moments of profound cruelty while laughing at the bizarre and ironic. Stylistically, "Crusades" is often clever but never overdramatic. A balance has been acheived between imagery and dialogue, so the audience is never bored by what's on screen.
For people interested in the Middle Ages, or even people who like history, this is an excellent choice of viewing.
