Overview

John Waters does a quirky spin on '50s nostalgia in Cry-Baby, his musical homage to Rebel Without a Cause and Romeo and Juliet. Set in Baltimore in 1954 at the birth of rock & roll, the film features Johnny Depp as Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker. Depp is pure charisma as a juvenile delinquent with a permanent tear slithering down his cheek, a reminder of his state-executed parents. In the depths of his despair appears goody-goody girl Allison (Amy Locane), who has a sexual crush on Cry-Baby. But Allison's Pat Boone-like boyfriend, Baldwin (Stephen E. Miller), the leader of the squares, is dead set against Cry-Baby and the rest of the juvenile delinquents and leads a revolt against them. In the resultant riot, the juvenile delinquents are blamed for the chaos, and Cry-Baby finds himself dispatched to reform school.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Karl Williams
If the word "mainstream" can even be used in the same sentence with his name, then this slyly funny, high-camp comedy from director John Waters is the Baltimore filmmaker's most mainstream cinematic effort. A zippy film performed with ardor by a talented cast, it's both a spoof of and an homage to the juvenile delinquent dramas of the 1950s that Waters clearly loves. While high on kitsch value and irony, Cry-Baby fails to keep the laughs coming or develop characters sufficiently, so that its energy flags by the conclusion. Waters and the type of film he's gently mocking are acquired tastes, but those with a predilection for both will be delighted by Cry-Baby.

I don't know why this movie was not included in the "Very Crudely Yours, John Waters" Boxed Set, but it is ridiculous that it isn't. Johnny Depp, Ricki Lake, Traci Lords, Iggy Pop. This is a very entertaining fair on the same level as the original Hairspray. Do yourself a favor and watch it.

Though this movie has been silently looked over by most of the general public, it is a wonderful gem of a film. John Waters managed to make two great musical comedies from around the period of 1988-1990 - Cry Baby and Hairspray. I first watched both movies when I was 4 years old (this was probably right when the movies were released to video sometime in 1990 or 1991) and now I'm 20 and still love them. I remember going to a party when I was 4 and met Ricki Lake. My mom told me that I followed Ricki Lake around the whole party talking about Cry Baby and Hairspray, and she was very surprised and thought it was cute at the same time. It's cool to read that other kids (even younger than me) have taken a liking to this great film. I can't believe it's now on dvd.. I had no idea until just before writing this review! Hooray!

Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker is a boy whose parents were executed for bombing different places using the alphabet as an order of bombing. Alison is a “square” but has a crush on “Cry-Baby”. Although her boyfriend is completely set on ruining any kind of relationship that Allison and Wade could possibly have. Johnny Depp plays the part of “Cry-Baby”. He is extremely HOTT! Wade is called Cry-Baby because when his parents were executed he tattooed himself a permanent tear under his eye. This movie was great and you get to hear Johnny Depp sing, and he is honestly pretty good! It was a good movie.

This is one of the best movies i have ever seen. Im loving the whole singing scene. I love all the song they sing in it. I cannot get enough of the whole movie it simply puts me in awe. The whole "bad boy" role of Crybaby Walker falling in love with the "square" of Allison brings it all in together! Amazing movie i must say!

Cry-Baby is the best movie ever. It has the traditional plot, the good girl in love with the bad boy. Johnny Depp was great in this movie, very hot!! I watched the movie when I was five years old and fell in love with it, and now I am 15 years old and its still my favorite movie!!
