Barnes & Noble - Cree McCree
Four monks are shot point-blank while chanting. The corpse of a scuba diver is discovered dangling from a charred tree. A body found in a trash bag has dissolved into human soup. These are not run-of-the-mill murders. Then again, C.S.I. is not your average cop show. The crack team of forensic scientists who helped make this series a surprise hit in its premiere season return with an even flashier array of high-tech tools in Season 2 to give viewers a ringside seat at the autopsy slab. Led by postmortem guru Gus Grissom William Petersen and savvy stunner Catherine Willows Marg Helgenberger, the sleuths maintain their trademark tight-lipped detachment as they probe dead bodies for clues to bizarre Las Vegas killings like those mentioned above. But a few cracks appear in the characters' façades this season, when we learn more about Catherine's former life as a stripper and Warrick's Gary Dourdan recovery from his gambling addiction. Even Grissom faces a personal trial: a hearing loss, possibly hereditary, that could threaten his career. Not everyone hailed this trend toward melodrama; one critic feared it might turn C.S.I. into "Dragnet goes Six Feet Under." Instead, the series spawned another monster hit C.S.I.: Miami and supplanted NBC's venerable E.R. as the dominant drama of the day. Laying the groundwork for next season, the spin-off is introduced in a late episode, along with C.S.I.: Miami's head honcho, Horatio Caine David Caruso.

    It's obvious

Not only does the simple chemistry of the science in this show work, but the chemistry between characters. There is virtually no sleeze in this show. No disappointing ten minute sessions of pointlessness. It keeps you on your feet, yet it relaxes all the same. What can I say? The evidence doesn't lie.

    What Television Should Have Been

If you want to know what CSI is all about, imagine this: the smart nerdy kids from your school grew up and wrote a show about smart nerdy adults who solve crimes with science. They also had the good taste to make the show plot driven instead of character driven, so that the show isn¿t sidetracked by the main character¿s private lives (imagine a crime show that doesn¿t revolve around who is sleeping with whom!). We are given enticing glimpses into those private lives from time to time, but we are never shown too much. The science is interesting and the felons are believable. The actors are good and work well in their character¿s roles in the ensemble. This is more than a strong show, it is some of the best TV we have had in a very long time. The show obviously grew out of the popularity of the various forensic shows that are so popular on cable, and keeps to the science that made those shows work. This is what television should have been...
