Overview

Much has been said about the works of artistic visionary Leonardo da Vinci, and though his personal life remains shrouded in secrecy, producer/director Robert Gardner offers a tantalizing glimpse into the existence of a man known not only for his art, but his brilliant inventions as well. In addition to painting such classics as "The Last Supper" and the "Mona Lisa," da Vinci also made an impression on the masses as a sculptor, a scientist, and an engineer. Over a century after his death, da Vinci's imaginative inventions continue to astound. Now fans of the arts can travel back in time to witness a true renaissance man as he explores his boundless talent while standing his ground in the face of shocking accusation and bitter betrayal.

This DVD is in some ways a response to the popularity of The DaVinci Code-an attempt to provide context and corrections to Hollywood's dubious historical framework. And for that it did rather well. The research was accurate and fits well for the length of this DVD. The filming was quite realistic, like a film crew following DaVinci through various episodes of his life with appropriate context provided in the narration. My hope is that this short introduction inspires more New Worlders to learn more about European history. The history of the Italian peninsula alone is full of more pratfalls, deception, intrigue, violence, power struggles, religious conflicts and outrageous characters than the entire pantheon of daytime soap operas combined. High drama indeed. Think of this as an invitation to a great series of stories that continue to this very day.
