Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Prime-time TV soap opera -- having become firmly entrenched in the '60s with such shows as Peyton Place -- reached its apogee in 1978 with the premiere of Dallas, including all the elements that fascinated viewers: wealth, power, familial intrigue, conspicuous consumption, and promiscuous sex. America immediately embraced the Ewings, a dynastic family of Texas oil tycoons headed by gruff patriarch Jock Jim Davis and his faithful wife, Ellie Barbara Bel Geddes. Initially the series revolved around the competition between siblings J.R. Larry Hagman and Bobby Patrick Duffy and their respective wives, Sue Ellen Linda Gray and Pamela Victoria Principal. Tempestuous baby sister Lucy Charlene Tilton and scheming brother-in-law Cliff Barnes Ken Kercheval spiced up the subplots, and various other characters did their level best to upset the Ewing apple cart. Dallas wasn't very subtle; everything was out in the open and dramatized with a heavy hand. In fairly short order, Hagman's J.R. became the man TV viewers most loved to hate, and his shooting at the end of Season 3 was the most-watched cliff-hanger episode in the medium's history up to that time. The series etched itself into the public consciousness, not only making for great water-cooler conversation in the nation's workplaces but even exerting an influence on fashion: In the late '70s, as a result of the show's popularity, wide-brimmed Stetsons and cowboy boots were sold all over the country. Dallas wasn't just another TV drama. It was a bona fide cultural phenomenon. This box set, which collects the first two seasons 1978-79 and 1979-80, will bring back fond memories for those who eagerly anticipated each episode way back when, and it will even delight those who caught up with the show much later via truncated syndication prints.

the best 2 for one deal available

I just ordered this a week ago.I wasnt gonna buy any dallas cause lets face it the show was on for 13 seasons thats a lot of money. But when I saw that I could get the first two seasons for around 25.00 I couldnt resist.Soap net does show reruns of dallas around 3:00am during the week. The main thing that attacted me to this was the special feature on the dvd set return to southfork or something like that it has a dallas reunion. So it was worth the money.I am not gonna buy the other seasons however because the only othe season that intrested me was when J.R. gets shot and we all know it was kirsten shepard sue ellen's sister who did it so why bother.I'm waiting for season 10 to come out which is the final season that had the very sexy and beautiful victoria principal who played pam who's character dies at the end of the season.I'm not buying the other in between seasons. So in my opinion seasons 1,2, and 10 are the best and only ones worth owning.

    Dallas Revisited

Several months ago, I started watching Dallas reruns on the "soap" channel. They abruptly stopped showing Dallas when I was able to watch, so I immediately purchased the DVD's of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd seasons and am currently waiting for the arrival of the 4th. I thought that I had been a faithful Dallas fan, but there seems to be so much that I had missed. I am thoroughly enjoying this trip down memory lane with the Ewings. The minute I hear the theme song start, I am ready for another episode. I hope that all of the seasons become available on DVD. I look forward to it.

Dallas - The Complete First & Second Seasons

Dallas is the greatest show ever shown on television. Dynasty is great also, they both have battled there way in the 80s to be number one. Dynasty and Dallas are so even with each other it's so hard to tell!!! But I would have to say Dallas is half a point higher than Dynasty!!

What every TV show should be

I remeber when I was younger my parents were addicated to this program when it was on. And now that I am older, I can see why. When I got I could not stop watching it. I just wish that they would hurry up and make all the rest of the seasons. I'm dying to find out what happens next...
