Overview

The quintessentially English mystery series Dalziel & Pascoe initially debuted on the BBC in 1996, and ran for eleven years, finally wrapping in 2007. Over the course of its run, it culled a loyal following of viewers, and sustained an enduring critical reputation for excellence. The program starred Warren Clarke and Colin Buchanan, respectively, as Detective Superintendent Andy Dalziel and Detective Inspector Peter Pascoe. As the series opens, novice Pascoe joins veteran Dalziel's team at the Mid-Yorkshire CID. The two men employ radically different methods in solving cases, and at first clash repeatedly. Yet in time, a level of mutual respect develops between them. This release features all three episodes of series 1: "A Clubbable Woman" (scripted by Alan Plater, "An Advancement of Learning" (scripted by Alan Plater, with special guest star Prunella Scales), and "An Autumn Shroud" (scripted by Malcolm Bradbury, with special guest star Francesca Annis).

Editorial Reviews

From the Producers
The blunt-talking Detective Superintendent Andy Dalziel (Warren Clarke) does not suffer fools gladly, but he has even more trouble with what he calls the "smart arses" of this world. So when the inexperienced Peter Pascoe (Colin Buchanan) joins his team at Mid-Yorkshire CID, the omens don’t look good. Pascoe is one of the new breed of career police officers -- armed with a degree, a caring attitude, and a sharp brain. At first Pascoe is somewhat taken aback by his brash and ballsy boss, but it soon becomes apparent there is more to Andy Dalziel than meets the eye. Pascoe and his feisty fiance Ellie (Susannah Corbett) find Dalziel by turns exasperating and amusing. And although Pascoe often has to bear the brunt of Dalziel's jibes, it is hard to resist his clumsy attempts at friendship. Based on Reginald Hill's books, the three 90-minute movies comprising Dalziel & Pascoe's first series debuted in March 1996 on the BBC, and include: "A Clubbable Woman," in which the pair investigates the murder of a Wetherton rugby player's wife; "An Advancement of Learning," which finds the duo investigating the surprise discovery of a school headmaster's remains; and "An Autumn Shroud," which sees the Pascoes off to their honeymoon while Dalziel goes off on holiday to the country, where he gets caught up in mysteries surrounding a lovely widow (Francesca Annis), her financially strapped country estate, and the untimely demise of her husband and son.

I purchased this DVD and the rest of the DVD's in the series (what is available) from a local Barnes and Noble store. I really enjoyed what I saw of the first selection (A Clubbable Woman). However in the last 5 minutes of A Clubbable Woman the DVD stopped . After running it through 3 different players and with it stopping at the same spot each time, I returned it. It was replaced by the store (cheerfully) and the same thing occurred again in the same exact spot. The store then ordered me one from the online bookstore and it does exactly the same thing. I am going to return it again, hopefully I can get a good copy. I really would like to see the end of the selection since I have purchased the series I would like to see the first one before watching the rest. In addition, I went online and have seen several complaints about this happening to other purchasers of this season of the DVD. It appears to be a problem with the manfacture of this DVD. I wish I had seen these complaints pprior to purchase but Barnes and Noble had no previously recored reviews before I wrote mine.
