Damages - Season 1

( 16 )

Overview

Season one of the dense and time-tangled Glenn Close legal thriller Damages begins with a flash-forward: Ellen Parsons Rose Byrne, a brilliant and, at that moment, very bedraggled Manhattan lawyer, has just discovered the bludgeoned body of her fiancé, medical resident David Connor Noah Bean.

An attempt on Ellen's life is made as well, and both attacks stem from her association with Patty Hewes Close, a power litigator who uses devilish tactics to fight on the side of angels. Six months prior to David's death, Ellen joins Hewes & Associates to work on a class-action suit brought by former employees of Arthur Frobisher Ted Danson, a corporate shark whom they accuse of selling his company -- and their pensions -- out from under them. As it happens, David's sister, Katie Anastasia Griffith, a talented young chef, catered a Frobisher event in Florida the night before he dumped his company's stock. Katie also had a fling that night with waiter Gregory Malina Peter Facinelli, who is later befriended by Frobisher's lawyer, Ray Fiske Zeljko Ivanek, whose folksy Southern charm masks demons. As the Frobisher case plays out over the season, Ellen is arrested for David's murder; Patty's loyal No. 2 at the firm, Tom Shayes Tate Donovan, struggles to emerge from under her shadow; and a number of characters emerge from the shadows, notably "Uncle Pete" McKee Tom Aldredge, Patty's avuncular Mr. Fix-It and her actual uncle; George Moore Peter Riegert, a former SEC official with ties to Frobisher; and freelancing NYPD detective Rick Messer David Costabile.

    I Also Recommend:

    A show that demands attention

I have not been a regular viewer of this show; it is on late at night and I fall asleep during it. It was hard to follow when I would attempt to watch it the next week. Finally I was able to watch a whole show and I was hooked. Each season appears to be independent, but there is a continuous storyline of the characters throughout the three seasons. I have the first two seasons on DVD and used my DVR to record this season. Having the season three available on DVD will be great. I keep looking for its release, but it has not been yet. This show is for adults. I would not recommend it for children or youth because of subject matter.

    Best Kept Secret

This show doesn't have a huge following surprisingly enough but remains one of my favorite shows on television. The writing is exceptional and the entire series has been wonderful thus far. I'm writing this review after having just finished Season 3 on TV. I recently bought Season 1 and 2 for my Mom for Mother's Day.

The acting is amazing, Glenn Close is superb...scary, raw, and deep!! Every episode for each season leads up to unexpected results at the season finales.

Get it, love it, own it!! You'll be glad you did.

    Surprises at every turn!

I love this show! Every time I thought I had things figured out, there would be twists to surprise me - and all the way until the very end, at the very last minute! The characters are intriguing and the acting is powerful. This is drama TV at its very best and having the DVD means not having to wait a week before seeing the next show!

If you like great acting and great writing - this is the show to see

I was blown away by the series (it helped that I got to sit down and watch it in a marathon viewing). I highly recommend this for those that like any of the legal procedural shows and love to read mysteries. The acting is top notch, the writing is tight and the story is full of unexpected surprises.

    more from this reviewer

    Glenn Close is superb!

I cannot say enough about this series except that season 2 cannot get here fast enough. This series has something for everyone; intelligence, mystery, thrills and just a superbly crafted story that will keep you guessing from episode to episode. It starts with a girl just out of law school getting into one of the best law firms around. What ensues is nothing but trickery, murder and one of the best scripts and actors to come along in a long time. Glenn Close shines as Patty Hewes, owner of the law firm who is defending a class action suit against Arthur Frobisher, played wonderfully be Ted Danson, who is being charged with insider trading just to name a few of his offenses. You cannot and will not want to miss one episode.

    Damages-The Best Series on TV

This is absolutely the best series on TV. Glen Close and Ted Danson are superb. If you did not get to see it on TV, buy the DVD. I have seen the complete first series 3 times and I am still buying the DVD. It is that good!!

    Wickedly compelling!!!

A dark, dark adventure. Superb writing, fine acting, and brilliant direction. Disappointing only if there is no follow-up series.

    Thrilling!

We watched Damages last year when it was on TV, it was outstanding! Every week we couldn't wait to see what was going to happen the next week - you just get so enthralled in it you can't stop watching it. Glenn Close was fantastic and so was Ted Danson. Don't miss this - it is a series that keeps you on the edge of your seat always trying to figure out whats going to happen next. We LOVED it. I hope they do a Season 2.

    Best FX show EVER!

I was spellbound during every episode, and could not WAIT for the next one to air. Glenn Close, Ted Danson, and Rose Byrne are all perfect in their roles. Bring on Season 2, FX! (You will not be sorry if you buy this...)
