The Marquise challenges Valmont to seduce the virginal Cecile de Volanges Uma Thurman before the girl can be wed. Valmont offers a more difficult counter-challenge: He bets the Marquise that he will be able to bed the very moral and very married Madame de Tourvel Michelle Pfeiffer. In the course of carrying out his plan, Valmont is stricken with a sudden case of honor and remorse, while the Marquise becomes all the more vicious.

In the 1980s, director Stephen Frears made such diverse films as My Beautiful Laundrette, Walter and Prick Up Your Ears, but it's safe to say that Dangerous Liaisons was his most ambitious achievement. Frears was working with his first large Hollywood budget; the results were both a critical and box-office success. Liaisons is based on an 18th-century novel by way of a Christopher Hampton play, and at least four movies have been made from the original story. In 1959, Roger Vadim produced Les Liaisons Dangereuses; a year after Frears' version, director Milos Forman made the uneven Valmont; and 1999 saw the a teenage update, Cruel Intentions. Of the four, Frears' is arguably the best; his deliberate, restrained direction is reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick's work in Barry Lyndon. His version isn't quite as much fun as Vadim's, but thanks the stellar performances of Glenn Close and John Malkovich, the movie has a fresh coat of pernicious complexity to it. Frears went on to capture more fiendish elements of human relationships with his next film, The Grifters.

    Great acting

    Both the script and the acting of this movie makes it one of my favorites. Great drama....

    A Classic

    I have watched this movie more times than i can remember. It is excellent if a little dark! Very clever dialogue and fantastic performances Glenn Close and John Malkovich. If you haven't seen it - it's a must!

    Decadence has never been this much fun!!

    What a deliciously wicked film! Every act of that evil creature, the Marquise de Merteuil, played by the supremely confident Glenn Close as mercurial, venomous and oh, so dangerous, screams "Wicked..!" John Malkovich complements her extremely well as Vicomte Valmont, her longtime cohort and partner-in-arms who seeks to preserve his nasty reputation as a heedless ravager but finds his reserve breached by the angelic Madame de Tourvel(an astonishing turn by Michelle Pfeiffer, who is outstanding as a woman deeply in conflict with the morals and beliefs she holds so dear as she finds herself unable to resist the wolflike Valmont). The schemers were lovers once; do they seek to ruin others merely to consider themselves worthy of the other? Do they lack the courage to own their passion but instead channelise it to betray that of others? Watch Close, in a telling and chilling sequence, refuse to be upped by the vengeful Valmont. Savour the sumptuous dialogue, beautiful sets and costumes and wallow in deceit and duplicity with these debauched characters. "You'll find the shame is like the pain: you only feel it once"- Close to Thurman. Absolutely not to be missed!!
