Overview

This family drama features the same cast and crew from the highly successful Four Daughters, but it isn't actually a sequel. Whereas the first film was a chronicle of the Lemp family, this one centers on the Masters family. This film is also characterized by a much happier ending than its predecessor. The story begins as a wandering husband finally returns home after a 20 year absence. He is alarmed to discover that his wife is planning to marry a nice stodgy fellow who yearns only to stay in the town of Carmel, California, the story's setting. Though the errant husband is still suave and charming, his two angry daughters reject and do all they can to get him to leave their hometown. But he is not so easily swayed and despite their protests, stays until he charms them into submission. The peace doesn't last long when he sees that one of his four girls is about to marry a younger version of himself. His wife is terribly upset not only by this development, but also by the fact that she must choose between her dull-but devoted fiance and her exciting, irresponsible husband (of whom she was legally freed after he was declared dead).

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
Although it utilizes virtually the same cast, in roles similar to what they played in the earlier film, Daughters Courageous is definitely not a sequel to Four Daughters. It's also not a great film, but it is a very entertaining one, a family melodrama with room for comedy and some considerably charm. Modern audiences may find it less engaging, being perhaps less willing to embrace Claude Rains' character and to forgive him for abandoning his family for 20 years merely because he's a free spirit and felt the urge to wander. This isn't meant to denigrate Rains, who turns in a first rate performance that is totally winning; it's merely that "deadbeat dads" are too much a part of the social problems landscape nowadays. By the same token, some viewers may become irritated by Priscilla Lane being taken in by John Garfield's charms and not seeing that he is the same kind of man as her wayward father. However, for those who can take these matters in their stride, Courageous can be quite engaging, thanks in large part to its fine cast and their chemistry with each other, as well as to Michael Curtiz' careful, well-maintained direction.
