Overview

Walt Disney Treasures: Davy Crockett is a collection of limited-edition episodes from the classic TV series fitted inside a handsome tin container. Each of these five episodes (including "Davy Crockett Goes to Congress, " Davy Crockett at the Alamo, "Davy Crockett's Keelboat Race, "Davy Crockett, Indiana Fighter, and "Davy Crockett and the River Pirate") is presented in 1.33:1 full-frame and sports some grain, dirt, and scratches along the way. While the colors are generally bright and even, some of these episodes have some instances of color bleeding and fading (due to the age of the show). The audio is presented in Dolby 2.0 Mono and sounds only slightly better than the video portions of the disc. Some of the dialogue sounds a bit distorted, and a few pops and crackles come up from time to time. No alternate language tracks or subtitles are included on this disc. Included in the extra features section is a still gallery which includes a lot of behind-the-scenes footage and promotional materials, "The Crockett Craze," a 20-minute look at the TV series' place in history, "A Conversation With Fess Parker" (one of the last production participants still living) which is an 18-minute interview discussing her role in the making of the series, and a nice eight-page booklet located inside of the tin. All in all, this is a nice-looking set that should please fans.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
For those who think young whippersnappers weaned on Pokémon and Spongebob Squarepants are missing out on real adventure would be well advised to hip their kids to Crockett! In 1956, American folk hero Davy Crockett captured the nation's hearts and imaginations; at least, he did in the form of actor Fess Parker, who portrayed Crockett in a series of wilderness adventures produced by Walt Disney for his Disneyland TV series. This two-disc set contains all five Crockett episodes and affectionately recalls the Davy Crockett craze that swept the nation, making coonskin caps a mandatory fashion statement. The original trilogy -- "Davy Crockett: Indian Fighter," "Davy Crockett Goes to Congress," and "Davy Crockett at the Alamo" -- holds up best as the upstart Crockett gives renegade Indian chiefs, blundering generals, and blowhard politicians "what fer" in the name of "freedom, fairness, and fun." It is obvious that Disney did not anticipate Crockett-mania; otherwise, he wouldn't have killed off his hero in "Alamo." But he resurrected Davy and sidekick George Russell Buddy Ebsen in two more tall tales, "Davy Crockett and the Keelboat Race" and "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates," both featuring the boisterous Mike Fink, self-proclaimed King of the River. All five are presented in glorious Technicolor, a luxury denied the original viewers of these 1955 broadcasts. As an added nostalgic bonus, each Disneyland broadcast comes complete with preview presentations of the next week's show.

    King of the DVD Frontier

As someone who grew up waiting patiently for the annual broadcast of the Davy Crockett mini-series on the ''Wonderful World of Disney,'' I can't truly describe what a treat this DVD set is. Not only are all three original shows included, with introductions by Walt Disney, but two additional programs are included which were produced on the heels of the Davy Crockett craze. The bonus material is enjoyable, and the only thing that's preventing me from giving this a Five-Star review is the omission of a recently produced ''Disney Family Album'' segment for the Disney Channel, which featured Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen, with a behind the scenes look at the making of ''Davy Crockett.'' Otherwise, this two-disk set is a ''must have'' for any Disney or Davy fan.
