Overview

The feature-film debut of director Zack Snyder, Dawn of the Dead is a modern retelling of George Romero's 1978 horror classic, which was actually the second film in a trilogy that began with Night of the Living Dead and concluded with Day of the Dead. After escaping to a shopping mall with a handful of other survivors, they decide that they only way to truly elude the approaching throng of undead is to somehow make their way to an island that is supposedly zombie-free. Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
George Romero's 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead is probably the greatest zombie movie of all time, as well as one of the best horror movies of the last 30 years. Set mainly in a suburban mall, it was as much a critique/satire on rampant consumerism as it was a chilling gore-fest. Though our country's capitalistic nature has only escalated in the last 25 years, the satirical content has been slashed in Zack Snyder's 2004 remake -- but the zombies are more ferocious than ever. Unlike your parents' undead, lumbering around aimlessly in search of brains, these zombies are fast, mean, and -- relatively speaking -- smart. Otherwise, this hi-tech update sticks pretty close to the source material. A visceral, violent pre-credit sequence brilliantly sets the stage: A strange plague infects much of the population overnight, causing the dead to rise and attack the living. Those not infected manage to hole up in a mall while the bloodthirsty corpses converge outside like shoppers on the day after Thanksgiving. Among the group of survivors are Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Mekhi Phifer, and Jake Weber. Who are they and what do they do? They fight zombies, of course -- and therein lies the problem with this remake. The script is nearly as mindless as the zombies, heading down the predictable path of offing the leads one by one as they fight to escape. Snyder is a skilled visual stylist, however, and makes up for it with sheer thrills. Adrenaline levels run high the entire film, and the jolts come fast and furious with plenty of squeamish delights for gore fans. With a little more care and attention to story, Dawn of the Dead could have truly rivaled the original; instead we merely get a real good scare.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

    Simply Awesome!

Again, I usually only review movies that I have seen recently, rather than movies that have been out for a while that I have seen several times, with the exception of some of my absolute favorites. That being said, this is my absolute favorite zombie flick, and in light of having just seen Zombieland in the theatres, I decided that I would mark the occasion and come on here & rate my favorite in the genre. This, of course, includes the original too, since they are basically the same, but I have actually never seen the original one all the way through...only ever so much of it, when I was younger, and I have seen all of the remake, so it's this one I decided to review. There is no doubt in my mind that the original is probably even better. I have been hard pressed as of late to get myself a copy, so as soon as I do, I am going to sit down and watch both & compare them. At any rate, this is truly a great zombie masterpiece...the best I've seen all of, and if you are into zombie & horror and have never seen this, definitely do. The cast does a great job, and there is some good zombie gore...and even some humor too, which is essential to have a little of in a good zombie movie. When it comes down to zombie flicks, this one has it where it counts. Below are some other great zombie flicks, and since Zombieland is not close enough yet to it's DVD release for me to rate it, I will just go ahead and say for now until it is available that Zombieland was freakin great too! Zombie lovers absolutely must see it! It's got good zombie stuff in it, and it is absolutely histerical! Go check it out!

the remake of dawn of the dead

this was a pretty good scary action packed zombie film and a great remake to the original. though the ending was sad and i thought no way can they end it like that. they should do a sequel. you can watch the original first or after. basically its the story of a group of people who hide out in the mall after the zombie chaos ensues. CJ was one bad a** character but hated what happened to his character. though i do wish they could of taken out some scenes that were not needed for the plot. oh well.

    Dawn of the Dead

This is more of an action movie than a horror, not like the original Dawn of the Dead. Although I still liked it even if it didn't hold true to it's roots.

    Dawn of the Dead

Great movie, it kinda falls into a catagory with the new breed of horror movie that are steered more toward action and jaw dropping special effects, but why complain? Is it neccesarily a bad thing that they don't make movies like they used to? I mean all my freinds that have seen the old one says its boring and it seems alot longer than it actually is. Times change, stop livin in the past and see whats right in front of ya! The new movie Land of the Dead is just like this one in the fact that the movies are a new breed now. And Mikii Phifer (I think thats how you spell it) played a great part in this one, go see 8 Mile he is meant to play these kind of roles. Sara Tucker could have put more into here role, her character was a little dry for me, but anyways... BUY THIS MOVIE!!!!!!

    A Flesh-Eating Good Time

Very smart. The first ten minutes are downright literary and should have gotten more serious reviews. The Johnny Cash song is a knock-out. Zombies are to the terrorist period (mindless frenzy) what vampires were to the communist period (cerebral & wrong). Also, the zombies look great, there's humor without jokiness, the characters and their relationships are pleasantly well-developed but not so much that they distract from the action, AND THERE'S NO HOPE, NO HOPE, WE'RE DOOMED!

    This movie kills!

A re-make of the second installment in George Romero's 'zombie' triology (Night of the Living Dead/Dawn of the Dead/Day of the Dead)...the original was the best of the three and the re-make makes the original look cheap and unimaginative. More along the lines of '28 Days Later' (highly recommended) with the dead becoming more fluid and intelligent, 'Dawn of the Dead 2004' is pure adrenaline from start to finish. The director's cut is surely going to be blood curdling....

    Very good remake

Thiswas the first film that I ever went to in theatres and hyperventilated, I mean parts of it were so well played out and built up just the right amount of suspense, you can't help but be scaried. In his feature debut, Zack Synder take the old zombie horror genre and breathes new life into for the new millenium, with this remake of the George Romero cult favorite of 1979. In the film, A group of the last remaining human beings find refuge in a shopping mall, nut soon realize that envetually, they wil have to leave. With a great cast and speical make up effects that will make your head explode (literally), this DVD will make a great edition to your collection.

    it was great!

lots of people hate this movie because it was nothing like the original. but who cares. the original is still here. anyway I loved this movie. besides this movie had alot of what the fisrt had. humor, horror, drama, and a mall. yes it is very different from the first, but it still brings the entertaining suspense. if you liked the first then you should check this flick out.

A must see film for schools around the globe!!!

This movie most accurately describes what it will be like during the coming zombie uprising. It is a must see for everyone who would like to survive longer than the first 24 hours. After seeing this movie everyone should read the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. It goes into more accurate detail what we can do to survive the uprising. good luck everyone and I'll see you in the new world.
