Overview

Marine biologists now estimate that the Earth's oceans and marine life formed around four billion years ago. But other questions remain more ambiguous. Where, for instance, did water itself come from? How did marine life itself originate? And how did initially-simple cells and protoplasms evolve into the stunningly complex life forms that we see before us today? In this ambitious documentary program, the teams at National Geographic attempt to answer these challenging questions, by undertaking an onscreen "Census of Marine Life" - posited as the broadest and most comprehensive survey of ocean species ever conducted. In undertaking these goals, the program draws on newly-shot underwater footage, advanced CG recreations, and many other elements.
