Overview

Experience one of horror craftsman David Cronenberg's most disturbing features as Jeremy Irons essays the chilling duel roles of twin doctors locked in a perpetual struggle of emotional dependence and mind games that will leave you mesmerized and horrified. The feature is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and offers audio rendered in both closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 and English Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround with optional English, French, and Spanish subtitles. Though the widely praised feature was originally given the deluxe treatment by Criterion when first released on DVD in 1998, Warner Home Video has also included some appealing bonus materials that will certainly make this an attractive release to Cronenberg aficionados. After listening to star Irons discuss the finer points of working with Cronenberg in an audio commentary track, viewers can hear more about the production in cast/filmmaker interviews and filmographies. A brief behind-the-scenes featurette delves into production even further, with a theatrical trailer and a fun "Dead Ringers Psychological Profiler" offering viewers the chance to test their own mental stability against that of the good -- or was it bad? -- doctor.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
David Cronenberg focussed his obsession with the grotesque inward with Dead Ringers. Unlike his previous efforts, the director is more interested in the emotional defects of his characters as opposed to their physical manifestations of deviance. The clinical, disquieting tone is somewhat surprising from a director who is considered something of an auteur of vulgarity, not only because of the bizarre qualities of his films, but also because of his tendency to push the boundaries of special effects. Too often, his early work annoys because the effects are deliberately cultish and preposterous (a quality he tempered for his mainstream remake of The Fly). In Dead Ringers, however, he uses an altogether more subtle effect, making twins out of lead Jeremy Irons though computer-aided split screen; the technique has since become much more widespread. Irons' distinguished performance (or rather, performances) makes sure that the technique isn't just a gimmick. Irons won several critics' prizes for his work in the film; many feel the actor should have been nominated for an Oscar as well.

    A reviewer

I am a connoisseur of films that mess with your mind. This one definitely tops the list. After viewing this film, I woke up in the middle of the night and could not go back to sleep. Jeremy Irons plays the dual role of identical twins as they slide into drug-induced insanity. The protrayal of his characters is both convincing and disturbing.
