The first episode, "Deadwood," begins in 1876, just two weeks after Custer's annihilation at the Little Bighorn. The richest gold strike in American history has drawn a slew of restless opportunists to Deadwood, a rowdy settlement where the only law is dispensed at the end of a six-gun. Ex-lawman Seth Bullock Timothy Olyphant has arrived to start up a hardware store, but before long he'll be embroiled in various misadventures with the town's most colorful characters: Wild Bill Hickok Keith Carradine, Calamity Jane Robin Weigert, and the Machiavellian owner of the Gem Saloon, Al Swearengen Ian McShane, whose fine work in this juicy role won him a Golden Globe. The 12 episodes of Season 1 are uniformly excellent, although it should be pointed out that Deadwood has raised eyebrows and inspired controversy, not only for its often brutally frank depictions of violence and sexuality but also for its promiscuous use of obscenities. In other words, this isn't your daddy's Wild West. Choices for first-season standouts include "The Trial of Jack McCall," in which the Gem becomes a courtroom after Wild Bill is shot from behind by a shifty little coward. "Bullock Returns to the Camp" is a pivotal episode in the development of the show's leading character: After trailing another murderer, Seth returns to the camp a marked man -- and one with a mission. The series finale, "Sold Under Sin," finds him wearing a sheriff's badge, and the town will never be the same. Unless Al Swearengen has his way, that is. Deadwood is not exactly what you'd call family entertainment, but it's an extremely well crafted series and highly addictive.

    not for the faint of heart

    great acting, but a very graphic show. while it adds to the realism it may offend some and is certainly not for young ones

    Very Good

    The first season of Deadwood is very well written and has a intriguing storyline.Do not look for historical accuracy,it was not written that way.It is a very good television.It is not for young children because of the language and violence.The acting is first class.The show is well directed.You will be engaged from the first episode 1 to the last episode.

    An instant addiction

    I was lucky enough to have a coworker lend me this because they liked it so much and I was instantly hooked. I can't wait to watch the next couple seasons if not buy them for my own copy. Some say the language is a bit over the top, which I would have to agree at points, but not enough to detract from the interest in the story. So maybe if your sensative to language go rent one of the Disks at your local rental store and if you like...there you go!

    Only television serise I will buy!

    I do not watch television due to the lack of anything of value or really worth my time out there right now. I was sick for a whole week and was givin this to (reluctantly) watch and was immediatly hooked and watched over and over. Each and every charecter is absolutely amazing! The humor is subtle and harsh but suites me well. The language and topics of politics and sexuallity are veary REAL. I am full of excited anticipation to see what happens along this gritty journey through Deadwood!

    go beyond certain words

    This is such excellent television that I am sad that the language pushes some away. For each spout of profanity there is a balancing amount of beautifully written and compelling prose. After watching Deadwood, I feel that the language used in my daily life is bland... and it doesn't leave me wanting to curse like a sailor to make up the difference. It leaves me craving to craft and create articulate and intelligent conversations, so please try with an open mind.

    An HBO Fan for Life!

    Deadwood, like all other HBO series, is such a truly wonderful achievement to watch, it is practically addictive. Despite how many characters there are, they are all developed and equally intriguing. The show is as close to perfect as a tv show can get.

    The Excessive Bad Language Takes Away From The Show

    I bought the first season on DVD. The idea for the series is excellent, entertaining and addictive. The only thing I do not like about it is the excessive use of profanity. I cannot believe that every other word in those days was 'F' or 'CS'.

    Not Your Father's Gunsmoke!

    What a thoroughly realistic and vivid portrayal of what the Old West was probably like. The characters are rich and once you see an episode you're hooked! The language is rough, but probably accurate for the times and this is absolutely great entertainment, although graphic and raw. This is a must see!

    Completely engrossing

    Just like a great book, I couldn't 'put it down'. I had already seen them on HBO, and I bought these for my father. We sat and watched one after another until they were done. Each character has depth and breadth like no other show ensemble. My father called to tell me he wouldn't have been able to wait the requisite week until the next episode! Can't wait for season 2.

    Not for the 'faint of heart'

    This western is not for the faint of heart. Though I personally feel that it does more accurately portray a mining town of that time period. A new town with mostly a male population, the few females being there in a 'to serve men' capacity and very few were wives in the beginning. Bad language? Yes. But you can go back to Henry the 8th's time and bawdy language and songs were there too. I hope this series never stops, at least for a time. I can't list any titles like this one. Deadwood stands alone! I am left wondering what ever happened to Tom Berenger's Peacekeeper. Could it have been too tame for today?
