Overview

Director Shusuke Kaneko picks up right where Death Note left off with this sequel to the box-office phenomenon that finds Light finally giving in to his dark side. In the first Death Note, Light (Tatsuya Fujiwara) focused his wrath on the criminal element, but these days the troubled teen is a bit more hasty in wielding his deadly pen. Lately, Light has taken to eliminating just about anyone who happens to get on his bad side -- a disturbing development that finds the police stepping up their efforts to discover the mysterious killer's true identity. Public opinion is split about what to make of Light's murderous exploits; while some view him as a godsend, others deride him for assuming the roles of judge, jury, and executioner. To the regular citizens, Light has taken on a godlike role and is frequently referred to as Kira (a katakana variation on the work "killer"). It seems that the teenage detective L (Kenichi Matsuyama) is hot on Light's trail, and as the clueless police task force continues to speculate, Light does his best to throw L's investigation off balance. When yet another notebook is dropped by death god Rem, adorable television personality Misa Amane (Erika Toda) discovers it and realizes that she now has the power to identify other notebook owners. Now, despite the fact that Light and Misa fall for each other hard, Light knows that their relationship can only end in disaster and attempts to keep his distance despite a growing emotional attachment to the pretty popular icon.

I was very pleased with the direction they went with this, given the changes that needed to be made in order to trim it down from the 12 volumes worth of books. Death Note makes for a wonderfully imaginative, intellectual thriller. A fantastic game of Cat and Mouse between geniuses, where there is not second place, only death. The lead actors did a phenomenal job bringing to life the eccentricities of the main characters and even though the Shinigami, Ryuk was very blatantly CGI, due to the content of the movie and it's source material, it worked very well. I highly recommend at least renting this two part movie, if not purchasing outright.

i really enjoyed this second installment of the death note movies. although it doesn't go with the manga/anime exactly, they still keep it pretty true to the real story line. i would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the anime/manga.

Being a fan of the death note series this one left me severely disappointed. The performances were decent for a live action and the way they designed the shimigamis was enjoyable. However, it was the plot of the movie that caused me great pain. They cut off the last and best part of the story and filtered bits and pieces into the main battle of L and Light for a script that didn't make much sense. As I enjoy soundtracks, this one was a letdown as they chose pop/rock music that didn't make much sense for the movie. Overall this movie was unforgettably bad and I still want my two hours back.

I was really sad when I read his death in the Death Note manga. But, I really like how L outsmarts Light by taking his own life with the Deathnote. Oh dear. I think I just gave it away. Hm. Sorry.
