Overview

Deathwatch finally comes to American shores in this solid DVD release from Lions Gate Home Entertainment. With an anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen image and 5.1 Dolby Digital sound, the film has been given a fine technical treatment that should help this scary little flick pump out the goods on your home theater. Extras include almost ten minutes of deleted scenes (including an alternate but not finished over-the-top death scene for one of the main actors) and two commentaries -- one with the director Michael J. Bassett and stars Jamie Bell and Laurence Fox, while the second one is a lone track by none other than Gollum himself, Andy Serkis. Given the choice, the group commentary is much livelier and enjoyable track to dig into, with Serkis' bordering on the kind of serious pretentiousness that tend to kill single-person commentaries. A slew of trailers have been included, though strangely not one for the actual film -- something that could be chalked up to rights issues between Lion's Gate and the original U.K. distributor Pathe Pictures. All in all, a fine release for a film that didn't get half the chance that it should have in America.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jeremy Wheeler
Deathwatch is a highly crafted atmospheric creep-out that knows when to go for the jugular and when to slather on the paranoia. Much better than the like-minded horrific war outing The Bunker, writer/director Michael Bassett's tale is a grim tale of trench warfare that delivers the creeps as much as the grotesque. Headed by a gonzo psychotic performance from Andy Serkis (Peter Jackson's Gollum for all you counting), the movie is a showcase for the cast, with lead Jamie Bell keeping it all together with a kind of wide-eyed naïveté that the viewer needs for the story to work. Aided by Hubert Taczanowski's splendid visual eye, the film has a great look that draws you in while the gruesome effects deliver a nightmarish battlefield as well as some bravura gore moments. Effectively chilly throughout most of the flick, there's a feeling that Deathwatch is exactly the movie that it was intended to be -- one that doesn't deflate amongst its own aspirations nor is it shackled by budget restraints. There aren't too many films in the war horror playground, but you can be sure that this one will be there, still standing on its own respectable merits.
