Overview

The most complete release of Dario Argento's masterpiece ever released, Anchor Bay has outdone itself with its exhaustive efforts to give this deserving film the best release possible. From the pulsing opening notes of Goblin's infamous score to the flawless picture presentation, this disc is a must-have for true fans that have bided their time with subpar bootlegs and attractive but incomplete previous editions of this landmark film. Presented in widescreen 2.35:1 and enhanced for 16 x 9 TVs, the image is as crisp and flawless as ever, with Argento and cinematographer Luigi Kuveiller's notoriously colorful and vivid visual scheme screaming to life with vibrant reds, solid blacks, and flawless skin tones. Remixed in English or Italian Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, Goblin's loud and ominous score more than adequately fills the room, resonating crystal clear while serving its purpose to both discomfort and thrill. Optional English subtitles are wisely placed beneath the image, fully preserving the composition and remaining large and easy to read without becoming distracting. Though presented predominantly in English on this disc, the original Italian version was censored before the English audio track was recorded, prompting English subtitles in the scenes containing Italian dialogue. The "Main Menu" selection scene is a pleasure to behold, attractive and easy to use while providing frightening cues upon each selection made. Extra features aren't extensive though they are extremely satisfying. Talent bios and filmographies are extensive and informative, and both the Italian and U.S. theatrical trailers are well presented and fun to watch, though the real treat among the special features is the 15th anniversary featurette. Featuring lively and informative interviews with Argento, co-screenwriter Bernardino Zapponi, and composers Goblin, the 11-minute featurette is a treat for Argento fans hungry for interesting historical facts regarding the genesis and production of the groundbreaking film. Fans may lament the lack of an audio commentary track, but as Argento himself says in the featurette, once his films are done he lets them go, preferring not to revisit them.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Amy Robinson
Considered by many to be horror auteur Dario Argento's finest film, Deep Red is a suprisingly complex and stunningly photographed giallo that deserves prominent display on every horror fan's shelf. After a psychic Macha Meril "sees" a killer's past crimes during a lecture, she is mysteriously murdered. As the unfortunate witness to her death, a musician David Hemmings doesn't fully understand what he saw and soon becomes dangerously obsessed with uncovering the truth. Argento's recurring interest in the unreliability of vision and memory are used to maximum effect, as characters repeatedly fail to recognize vital visual and aural clues. Similarly, Argento's characters choose to or fail to connect with others on a personal level, creating both isolation and a vulnerability to the inevitable, massively bloody murder sequence. As any fan would expect from Argento, Deep Red possesses a pulsating rhythm, striking color, and lyrical camera work. Perhaps more subtly but equally intriguing are the film's distinctively differentiated sets, which provide crucial information about those who occupy them. Anchor Bay's DVD release proves to be the definitive director's cut, providing Argento fans with a palatable video version of this cult and mainstream horror classic.
All Movie Guide
Finally available in a fully uncut version, Dario Argento's Deep Red is a first-rate slasher film and one that would be an inspiration in style, direction, and music for such later films as Halloween and Friday the 13th. As with most of Argento's pictures, the murder sequences prove to be the highlight of Deep Red, but the script for this one is significantly stronger and the actors much better. As John Carpenter later did in Halloween, Argento keeps the body count to a minimum, but more than makes up for the low number by heaping on the style. Each of the murders is perfectly choreographed with particular praise going to Glauco Mauri's killing. In the scene, Mauri stands in his living room holding a knife, awaiting the killer he knows is there. Instead, a menacing puppet comes through a doorway at the shocked man, and that's when the killer strikes, smashing the man's face into several sharp corners before finishing him off with a knife. Another strong image is that of a victim being dispatched by drowning in scalding water (a scene that inspired a similar murder in Halloween II). The cast, led by David Hemmings and Argento regular Daria Nicolodi (who has two children with the director), is very strong, and features some exceptional background characters such as a little girl who likes spearing lizards. Technically, the film is another example of Argento's expertise with cameras, special effects, and sound effects. The director's use of widescreen lensing is exceptional and the film should never be watched unless letterboxed. The final reel wraps the film up in a thrilling manner and features two extremely graphic deaths that leave the viewer stunned as the credits roll. The newly restored version is nearly 30 minutes longer than the previous American tape, but much of the footage is playful dialogue between Hemmings and Nicolodi that only slows the picture down.
