Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Michael Stabile
In an era when many vocalists are made in the studio, Diana Krall's voice feels born of the elements. Live in Paris, recorded on December 1, 2001, shows off Krall's alluring, elastic instrument in its natural state. While the songs on her albums follow a conceptual ordering that harks back to those of Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra, Krall's concert shows off the songs as islands unto themselves. Virtually every tune is a love song, and yet in Krall's hands this is far from a limitation, as her smoldering contralto and piano find new urgencies, contradictions, and joys in a series of revelatory renditions. Shuttling chiefly between her widely acclaimed When I Look in Your Eyes and The Look of Love albums, Krall is thoroughly at home with her core sidemen and a full orchestra. All parties involved wield an intrinsic sense of swing and fire, and the best songs -- particularly the ethereal "East of the Sun West of the Moon" and the sensual "Do It Again" -- show Krall's voice to be among the most significant instruments in modern jazz. Tracks are as follows:
  • I Love Being Here with You Only Trust Your Heart
  • All or Nothing at All Love Scenes
  • Let's Fall in Love When I Look into Your Eyes
  • The Look of Love The Look of Love
  • Maybe You'll Be There The Look of Love
  • 'Deed I Do All for You
  • Devil May Care When I Look into Your Eyes
  • Cry Me a River The Look of Love
  • I've Got You Under My Skin When I Look into Your Eyes
  • East of the Sun West of the Moon When I Look into Your Eyes
  • I Get Along Without You Very Well The Look of Love
  • Pick Yourself Up When I Look into Your Eyes
  • S'Wonderful The Look of Love
  • Love Letters The Look of Love
  • I Don't Know Enough about You Love Scenes
  • Do It Again When I Look into Your Eyes
  • A Case of You unreleased

    The Ultimate Performer

I gave "Torch Songs" and "Lady Sings The Blues" to my husband because of the variety of his favorite singers each CD contained. From those CDs he discovered Diana Krall. We joined her fan club and bought all of her CDs. He passed away last year and I treasure all the music we shared. When I saw the promo for Barbra Striesand's newest CD "Love Is The Answer" co-produced with Diana Krall, I had to have it. Barbra is always the ultimate vocal instrument. Her voice combined with the Diana's piano and orchestration is a great sound. I believe watching the 'Live In Paris" concert and reading the insert makes the Barbra CD more special.

This is a remarkable Diana Krall DVD

This was recommended to me by the music manager who has learned what I love in jazz. I had this as a CD, but as a DVD it is sensational. It's among my favorites. If you love piano jazz and sultry singing with amazing orchestra and quartet and Diana Krall, you will love this DVD.

    We Want Another, PLEASE!!!!

I agree 120% with all the positive reviews! My hope is that another DVD with the same orchestra, arrangers, musicians and timeless songs (only different...ah, what?) can grace us once again by Christmas. It's the only gift I want.

Diana Krall: Live in Your Home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every couple of days, I check the Verve web site to keep track of Diana's touring schedule. I saw her in concert last year on Long Island and can't wait to see her again!! ThisDVD of her live concert in Paris is like seeing Diana Krall: Live in Your Home!! I recently purchased a 52'' high definition TV and Diana's DVD on the same day. I love the tv but the concert is mesmerizing. I was very familiar with all the songs as I have the CD in my car so it was nice to see it all together on the DVD. I'm planning a party and instead of just playing CD's in the background, I'll be playing Diana's Live in Paris as well as Norah Jones DVD.

Following Her Own Path-A gift to anyone who likes Jazz

As I saw her on PBS in Houston; and watched her being who God created her to be; a tear came out of my right eye from seeing someone totally in their element. I am thankful that I was born in this section of eternity and I got to witness this extraordinary manisfestation of being all she can be.

    Diana Krall-Live in Paris

Easily, Diana Krall's best and most exciting recording. I keep it in my car and I know every note, every lyric, every nuance. East of the Sun/West of the Moon - wow...a tour de force! Her treatment of this great standard is a thrill....what an arrangement...I love it so much that I keep hitting the repeat button....just can't get enough!! Her marvelous piano playing - particularly in East of the Sun - is just amazing. A gifted musician. Truly a ''desert island'' pick. Buy it.

    Great performance!

The concert in our city was sold out, so this was the next best thing. It's amazing how she can play the piano with stilettos, sing, flip her hair back. . . all at the same time! Very talented. Seriously, it's great to hear her compliment the band, especially Jeff Hamilton (who also recently played to a packed venue in our city.) I'm giving this DVD as Christmas presents. See Bruce's comments for more review which I concur.

    An Alltogether Perfect Concert

This really wonderful DVD converted me into an ardent fan of Diana Krall. Her band is playing great, John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton are doing a great job, and, Diana is not only singing terrific, but also impressed me by giving a very substantial piano performance. In addition to the musical merits of this album, the pictures are also fantastic: magnificent close up views of all the musicians, as they are immersed in the rhythm they produce. Here is a young artist at the height of her capabilities! Easily the best DVD, I possess.

    The whole package

It seems that God makes us in so many different ways. Some are blessed with a great talent, such as a musician. Others are great looking. More rarely, some are blessed with both. MS Krall, inarguably, is one of those. An amazingly talented pianist, gifted vocalist, and with earthy-beautiful (even stunning) looks. Perhaps even more amazing is how un-caught-up with herself she appears to be. I saw her in Kansas City recently, and (much like on this DVD)she spends a great deal of time talking about her (amazing) band, and generously shares the spotlight. The recording quality (both audio and video) realy delivers the ambience of a small jazz club, and really transports us to a front row seat. There are no flashy directorial or production bells and whistles. Instead, it's an excellent, intimate way to experience MS Krall and band. The playing and singing stands up by itself. A GREAT DVD!!

    Parisian paradise

Diana Krall ¿ Live in Paris In 1996 this artist broke into the scene in a big way with her debut album and Nat Cole tribute CD entitled ''All for You¿. By 1999 she had been thrice nominated for Grammys, and had won one for Best Jazz Vocal-counting among her achievements a best Album nomination ¿ the first time a Jazz album featured in this category in 25 years ! Diana has a Platinum album and her latest ¿Look Of Love¿, just went quintuple Platinum (4/10/02) in Canada. Recently, Diana toured and was dual billed with Tony Bennett. As a Canadian Jazz influence in the tradition of Oscar Peterson, Diana was a piano prodigy ¿discovered¿ by her mentor (and Peterson sideman of long standing) bassist Ray Brown. Diana has discussed her piano influences, and has mentioned and exhibits ¿touches¿ from the likes of: Jimmy Rowles (who encouraged her to add singing to her piano work), Nat Cole, Bill Evans, Monty Alexander and at her recent (Easter weekend) Radio City Music Hall appearance, she admitted to and recommended listening daily to that ¿towering¿ virtuoso of Jazz piano- Art Tatum. It¿s the height of understatement to say she¿s got a fine way to treat a Steinway. This ¿dynamo from Nanaimo¿ ¿ British Columbia, was blessed with an embarrassment of riches by her creator: piano chops to beat the band- to say nothing of making it swing like hell; a voice that has been called a smoky blend of honey and scotch-alternately sweet, raspy, bluesy, lyrical and scatting lying perhaps somewhere between Sarah Vaughn and Carmen McRae. Last, but not least, Diana has a face that seems to be without a flaw that the camera loves from any distance or angle and at all times. The statuesque Ms. Krall might easily have used her lesser talents to become a successful fashion model, as it is Dianas¿ looks make her a natural for a visual medium like DVD. I was fortunate enough to have attended 2 live performances by Ms. Krall and to have met the gracious performer on one of those occasions. Armed with this knowledge, I recently got the Diana Krall DVD, it is simply put FAN TAS-TIC, superbly filmed, with great audio (use your Stereo Receiver preferably with Dolby 5.1 or if necessary the DVD players¿ Headphone jack) and extremely representative of what seeing a live show of hers (with a very tight group of sidemen) is like. Camera placement is always right ¿ following soloists and big band accents perfectly. This effort was very well thought out and edited. Visually artful¿ the opening scenes of Paris evoke the concert feel ¿ an anticipation of opening night- from the Eiffel Towers rotating beacon to the chiaroscuro Notre Dame cathedral. Later, scenes of Parisian parks in the fall are used to great effect, and other night scenes with Diana traveling on a rainy Paris night. In the Audio department- Dianas¿ sextet includes a quintet of skillful sidemen: Jeff Hamilton on the drums (of ''LA Four'' - also played with Monty Alexander, among many others) Paulinho DaCosta on percussion, (who played with Ella, Joe Pass and others), John Clayton is on Bass- and he solos superbly once even bowing his bass ala Slam Stewart on East of the Sun. Anthony Wilson is great on Electric Guitar- creating delicious dialogs with Diana on a number of the 15 tunes and 2 encores on the DVD. Wilson, cultivates a sound that is sometimes reminiscent of Joe Pass esp. on the standard ¿Pick Yourself Up¿ which has a very up tempo, 1-2, swing feel. John Pisano on acoustic Guitar does great work throughout but is a standout on a Jobim flavored version of Gershwin's ''S'Wonderful''- and several others. Alan Broadbent a Bill Evans piano ''disciple'', conducts many of the orchestra backed numbers and the session succeeds admirably at combining an orchestra subtly w/o overpowering the smaller Jazz group, which often ventures out on its¿ own. Guest conductor Claus Ogerman is a force in Kralls latest album and he¿s legendary for work done with Tom Jobim, Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisa
