Dick Cavett Show: John & Yoko Collection

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Bill Pearis
While perhaps not as widely recalled as their weeklong stint guest-hosting The Mike Douglas Show, John Lennon and Yoko Ono's appearances on The Dick Cavett Show are no less notable or entertaining. Barnes & Noble - Bill Pearis
While perhaps not as widely recalled as their weeklong stint guest-hosting The Mike Douglas Show, John Lennon and Yoko Ono's appearances on The Dick Cavett Show are no less notable or entertaining. The couple's first visit, included in this collection, came in September 1971, when they were the evening's only guests. With the year-old breakup of the Beatles still a hot topic and John and Yoko's political activism generating headlines, it was quite a coup getting them on the show, and Dick Cavett basically gave them carte blanche. In addition to the lively and often funny conversation, John and Yoko brought promotional films for "Imagine" and Yoko's "Mrs. Lennon," as well as an except from Lennon's experimental time-lapse film "Erection." The interview went so well that cameras continued to tape even after the hour was up, and the leftover footage was aired two weeks later -- cutting short Cavett's interview of scheduled guest Stan Freberg. In his truncated interview segment, Freberg tells a hilarious anecdote about being bumped from The David Frost Show by John and Yoko earlier that year. The other episode included in this collection dates from 1972, with the pair performing their controversial single "Woman Is the Nigger of the World." Lennon remarks that the only people having a problem with the song are white males. Still, ABC was nervous about airing it, and the network forced Cavett to insert a taped warning that the show's content might offend sensitive viewers. In an intro to the episode recorded for this DVD, Cavett still seems irked about having to do it. The erudite host talks further about his recollections of the Lennons in a new interview also included on this set. It's apparent from the three appearances that John and Yoko really felt people could change the world, and the electricity in the air can still be felt some 30 years later.
