Overview

Fox scores a hat trick with the release of Die Hard With a Vengeance in a special edition DVD. All three films in the Die Hard series have been given the royal treatment, and this one is no exception. The picture is presented in an anamorphic widescreen format with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio and looks clean and sharp. The sound is offered in Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 and is stunning, taking full advantage of the surround capability. Also on the first disc is a commentary track from director John McTiernan, screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh, and former head of Fox distribution Tom Sherak. As with the other special editions of the Die Hard series, the second disc is made of the extras. Included in this section are behind-the-scenes documentaries, breakdowns of the visual effects, trailers, and a pair of featurettes that were originally shown on television. Most notable is the inclusion of an alternate ending, offered with or without a commentary from Hensleigh. As with the other releases in the series, Die Hard With a Vengeance boasts superior picture and sound and a stellar collection of extras, making it a must-buy.

All Movie Guide
It's difficult to take any movie subtitled Die Harder seriously. Luckily, the this sequel to 1988's Die Hard seems slyly aware of its own preposterousness and plays like one great, big, tongue-in-cheek smirkfest. Much like a James Bond film, Die Hard 2 is full of ridiculous plot contrivances, logic bending and superhuman stunts, but its bravado forces you to say, "who cares about all that." It's so far outside of the realm of reality that it defies you to make a critical remark, even in regards to the huge amount of carnage on display. Of course, the perfect ringleader for all the jolly destruction is Bruce Willis, the man who has built a career largely on his ability to look good while suffering great physical hardships. He's the perfect "Iron Everyman" for the rough and tumble Die Hard series. In the early 1990s, Willis was hardly doing the sort of business expected of a major movie star; Die Hard 2 would be his only major success until 1994, when the actor re-asserted himself with his supporting role in Pulp Fiction.

The black sheep of the franchise? Certainly NOT! One of the better action sequels around!

It's a Renny Harlin film. Three word translations: run like hell. See different movie. Bemoan wasted dialogue. Do not bother. Long Kiss Goodnight. In all seriousness, the craptacularity of Die Hard 2 has a lot to do with its clapped out similarities to the first Die Hard. Skip straight to the third movie in the Die Hard Installment (which was saved by Sam Jackson and the puzzles -- Jeremy Irons is no Alan Rickman) and hope that Live Free or Die Hard (love that Red State title!) obtained a restraining order ordering Harlin to stay 1,000 miles away from any aspect of the movie at all times.
