Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Bruce Willis and John McTiernan -- the star-director team that established an often imitated action-movie blueprint with 1988’s Die Hard -- reunited for this explosive, thrill-a-minute 1995 sequel. Willis reprises the role of tough, taciturn cop John McClane, playing cat-and-mouse yet again with a vicious terrorist. In a nod to the original film, the sadistic madman tormenting McClane is Simon Gruber Jeremy Irons, brother to the character played by Alan Rickman in Die Hard, who’s out to avenge his sibling’s death at the cop’s hands. With bombs planted in schools all over New York, Gruber sends McClane on a succession of fool’s errands before implementing the plan calculated to ensure his revenge. Although the Willis character fought alone in the first two Die Hard films, McTiernan gives him a reluctant sidekick in the ubiquitous Samuel L. Jackson, here playing a Harlem shopkeeper caught up in the terrorist’s game. The Willis-Jackson bickering gives Vengeance a Lethal Weapon feel and offers viewers a few seconds to catch their breath between suspenseful action set pieces. The episodic plotline and driving pace is reminiscent of an old cliff-hanger serial, and like those continued-next-week thrillers of yore, Die Hard with a Vengeance will keep you perched on the edge of your chair. The new two-disc Five-Star Edition offers a commentary by McTiernan, an interview with Willis, two TV specials about the film, a making-of featurette, behind-the-scenes vignettes, a sequence shown in storyboard form, and special-effects breakdowns, plus various trailers and TV spots.
All Movie Guide - Jeremy Wheeler
Die Hard With a Vengeance brings John McClain back to the big action and equally large laughs that made the original so successful. With action virtuoso John McTiernan returning to the series, this third entry is heavily buttered popcorn entertainment that manages to not get pulled in by the same plot devices that were regurgitated in Renny Harlin's fun but flawed second film. There's still the heavy terrorist angle, but what the deft script does so well is turn the tables on good old Bruce Willis, while teaming him with a hilarious Samuel L. Jackson for a cat-and-mouse game through the streets of New York City. And though Jeremy Irons is no Alan Rickman, he takes great evil glee from his goofy-accented movie villain and is miles above the sorry antagonists from the previous film. Supporting characters are equally as fresh, with both the cops and the mugging German henchmen getting juicy screen time throughout the piece. With numerous gusto action scenes that only McTiernan could deliver, Vengeance lives up to the high pedestal of the series and makes for one heck of a fun thrill ride. The ending is probably the film's biggest fumble, reshot at the last second to make up for an original ending that found Irons escaping to Europe where McClain hunts him down with a bazooka (true!). It's strange how history shines upon Die Hard With a Vengeance, especially after 9/11. This is one movie that simply could not be made now. It does, however, feature some incredibly unnerving visuals that are downright haunting considering the events that occurred just six years later.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert

Die Hard With a Vengeance is basically a wind-up action toy, cleverly made, and delivered with high energy. It delivers just what it advertises, with a vengeance.

    Amazing Movie.

This movie could possibly be in the top 20 best action movies ever made. John McClane (Bruce Willis) is under preasure when Simon Gruber (Jeremy Irons) is starting to bomb areas in New York City. McClane has been on suspension from the NYPD and has been drinking like crazy. Simon Gruber who is the brother of Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) whom McClane brutally murdered in Die Hard 1, wants to avenge his brother and is making McClane do whatever he feels. McClane is running around the city doing everything Simon tells him. Shopkeeper Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson) eventually finds McClane and gets involved with his case. An awesome movie and series.
