Overview

Dinosaurs live -- and walk, and talk -- in the made-for-TV feature Dinotopia, featured in a 2-disc edition from Artisan. The film is presented in a 1.33:1 full frame transfer and looks very nice. The colors, black levels and flesh tones are all accurately represented with only a small amount of grain showing up from time to time. Otherwise, this is a fine transfer that features hardly any major imperfections. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround in English. This sound mix is only mildly ...

This sound mix is only mildly interesting with most all the effects, music and dialogue being filtered through only the front and rear speakers. While the bulk of the track is free of any excessive hiss or distortion, overall this isn't a 2.0 mix to write home about. No alternate subtitles or soundtracks are included with this set. This 2 DVD set includes a wealth of extra materials, starting with the featurette "Evolution: The Making of Dinotopia" which includes behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with producer Robert Halmi, Sr., writer Simon Moore, and others. This is a fairly fluffy featurette that adds little to one's knowledge of the film's production. "An interview with composer Trevor Jones" is a nice piece for those with an interst in film music. A storyboard for the T-Rex attack and some deleted scenes allow the viewer a quick glimpse at what it took to bring ideas to the screen, and what was left on the cutting room floor. The "Dinotopia Encyclopedia" features three separate sections ("Dinosaur Data," "Saurian Alphabet" and "Travel Through Dinotopia") which includes maps, definitions and other info about the dinosaurs of the film. Finally there are a few deleted scenes, six trailers for other Hallmark titles, an animated photo gallery, some cast and crew biographies, a Game Boy Advance preview, a maze game for kids, and some DVD ROM features.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Somewhere between Sid and Marty Krofft's Land of the Lost and Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park lies Dinotopia -- a remote island paradise where humans live in harmony with dinosaurs well, the herbivores, at any rate. Author James Gurney's books are liberally interpreted in this spectacular four-hour miniseries nominated for seven Emmy Awards, including Best Miniseries, which features awesome special effects from the Walking with Dinosaurs people. Tyron Leitso and Wentworth Miller star as Carl and David, estranged brothers who wash up on Dinotopia's shores after the plane in which they are island-hopping with their father crashes into the ocean. From a ride on the back of a Brachiosaur to a too-close encounter with a herd of rampaging T-rexes, it doesn't take long to convince the brothers that they aren't in Kansas anymore. Taking them under her wing is the beautiful Marion Katie Carr, a 20th-generation Dinotopian who squires them to Waterfall City, where the newcomers become "the talk of the place" and enroll in the local academy. While David comes to feel at home in Dinotopia, Carl just wants to go home. And both fall in love with Marion. Their destiny is to save Dinotopia by venturing into the forbidden World Beneath to procure sunstones, which are used to fend off the island's deadliest residents. The digital dinos steal scenes with abandon, especially Dinotopia's answer to C3PO, the talking, Ping Pong-playing Zippo, and the adorable dino baby, 26. Among the humans, David Thewlis stands out as the scheming outlaw Cyrus Crabb, with Alice Krige as the island's matriarch far nicer here than in her Borg Queen guise from Star Trek. Dinotopia, as David remarks at one point, is "mind-blowing."

    Dino-Fantastic

We actually checked out the double VHS tapes from the library, now I am going out to buy the DVD this weekend! I must say, its been a long, long time since I have been so swept away by a story (''The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'' was a childhood favorite). I say ''a story'' for this reason, although I was impressed by the CGI, it really was the acting, moreso the overall ambiance of the film that kept my attention, not to mention the concept. I am a happily married father of 3 boys and an African American, I was happy with the positive role models both racially and morally! It was a delight to see the character of ''Oonu'', Commander of Skybax Pilots (played stoically by Colin Simon ¿Tomorrow Never Dies¿). We hope to see him in more films in the near future. We absolutely enjoyed the film and look forward to the DVD packed with extras!

    AMAZING

My dad showed this movie to me when I was a little kid (it came out when I was 7) and I loved it. Our vhs tape of it is messed up and now I may watch it without the messups and I can take it wherever I go.

    Amazing!

I saw the movie on tv, and it was one of my top favorites. The story really came alive, and after the first part, I could barely wait to see the rest of it. It was never boring, and kept me engaged in the story. Anyone who loves fantasy or suspense should see it.

    Great family viewing!

I have never read the book, but I loved the movie. No, the acting wasn't SUPERB, hence the 4 stars, but if you want an entertaining, interesting movie for the whole family to watch this is it. Especially for dinosaur lovers. The bad guys are never Terribly bad, and the Carnivorous dinos are never graphic and Gruesome. Grab your family and watch this enchating tale!

    GREAT!!

I really loved this miniseries! I taped it when it was on television and now I bought the DVD. It's a wonderful story, and I don't care what anyone else says: the acting was NOT bad! The actors were very believable. This movie is a great pick for the whole family to enjoy together.
