Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Bill Pearis
In an era where MTV barely plays them, music videos have become a maligned art form, and most promo clips today are barely indistinguishable from the commercials around them. There are still mavericks out there, however, pushing the boundaries of music video in new and exciting directions. The Director's Label was created as a showcase for these short-form visionaries, and this box set collects the first three releases -- compilations of the work of Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, and Michel Gondry. With his prankster tendencies, Jonze Being John Malkovich enjoys the greatest name recognition of the three, having directed classic clips for Björk "Oh It's So Quiet", The Beastie Boys "Sabotage", Weezer "Buddy Holly", and Fatboy Slim "Praise You" and "Weapon of Choice" -- all included here. Cunningham's work is the stuff of dreams: His video for Björk's "All Is Full of Love," featuring robotic facsimiles of the singer, may be the most beautiful video ever made. He has a dark side, too, as demonstrated here by the Aphex Twin's "Windowlicker" and "Come to Daddy," both as creepy as they come. Neither Jonze nor Cunningham, however, can hold a candle to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind director Michel Gondry, the real genius of the genre. He turned the White Stripes into LEGO blocks for "Fell in Love with a Girl" and cloned Kylie Minogue in the mind-numbingly complex "Come into My World"; and the innovations he pioneered for the Rolling Stones' "Like a Rolling Stone" video helped birth the celebrated "bullet-time" effects in The Matrix. He too has worked with Björk -- six times, actually -- including "Bachelorette," which plays like the video equivalent of a Russian nesting doll. Gondry's work is so creative, so captivating, you'll find yourself watching videos for songs or artists you don't even like. While the Jonze and Gondry collections are loaded with extras that are nearly as entertaining and creative as the videos, Cunningham's disc is on the skimpy side. The bonus disc, exclusive to this collection, adds more recent videos and short films from both Jonze and Gondry, press conference footage involving all three directors as well as Jack Black, and a poster designed specifically for this box by Cunningham. If you have any interest in music video at all, the Director's Label Series Box Set is fundamental viewing.
