A teenage girl learns about love, adult responsibility, and how to do The Dirty Boogie in this romantic drama. In 1963, "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is a 17-year-old spending the summer with her family at a resort hotel in the Catskills; she plans on being in the Peace Corps next summer, so this is expected to be her last summer as a carefree adolescent. Baby doesn't get along with her older sister, Lisa (Jane Brucker), and she's bored to tears by most of the older guests at the resort. However, one night Baby hears what sounds like a party going on in the employee's dormitory, and she pokes her head in to discover most of the hotel staff enjoying the sort of close dancing that would get you kicked out of the senior prom in no time flat. Baby is particularly struck by handsome Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), a dancer in the resort's floor show, and falls head over heels in love, wanting to be near him. When Johnny's dance partner, Penny (Cynthia Rhodes), finds herself pregnant after a fling with one of the waiters, Baby volunteers to learn her steps and take her place; however, Baby's father, Dr. Jake Houseman (Jerry Orbach), will have none of it, convinced that Johnny is a low life and that his daughter is too young to understand her own feelings. Dirty Dancing was a surprise box-office hit, and the soundtrack album was an even bigger success, spawning several hit singles and inspiring a top-drawing concert tour featuring several of its artists.

All Movie Guide
Featuring Patrick Swayze's heat-seeking pelvis, Jennifer Grey's original nose, and lavish helpings of dance-floor sensuality and coming-of-age nostalgia, Dirty Dancing was one of the great guilty pleasures of the 1980s. A genuine sleeper hit, it became an instant cult classic. For anyone who grew up during the 1980s, the film occupies a niche not far removed from that occupied by such Brat Pack favorites as The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo's Fire; seeing it was a sort of rite of passage. When it comes down to it, Dirty Dancing, while not exactly an example of great filmmaking, is a prime example of great entertainment. Like any number of coming-of-age dramas, what it lacks in finesse it makes up for in heart. As effusive and well-meaning as its teenage protagonist, Dirty Dancing is an unabashedly romantic exercise in both the suspension of disbelief and the healing powers of well-choreographed nostalgia.

First I must say I am a huge movie fan.I have been watching and buying movies" now mostly dvds" for around 20 years.I first saw dirty dancing when I was around 17 years old.At first I was really skeptical about sitting through a so called " chick Flick".But as the movie got going I really found myself engrossed in the story line.I must say the most memorable line that sticks out in my head for some reason is the line " nobody puts baby in a corner".And who can forget the outstanding dance sequence at the end.Dirty dancing came out in the era of over indulgence in the time of big hair and overspending but is set in a more simpler time gone and almost forgotten. A plus all the way.

It was the best movie I have evere seen! I have watched it at least 10 times. It never gets boring and the music is soo upbeat and fun. You fall head-over-heels for the bad boy Johnny, and you take a ride with Baby throught learning new things that are both hard and easy. It is an equsite masterpiece that will never be forgotten!

In Dirty Dancing, the plot is simple but wonderfully thought out. The dancing is some of the best I have every seen. I am really into dance movies and this is the best one that I have seen. Everything from learning about the charactors to them falling in love has new surprises. This is my favorite movie of all. This also has the best end scene that I have ever seen.

I first watched this movie when I was about 6 or 7. Every Easter my grandmother would bring it over and we all watched it together. I fell in love with it. I don't understand the power it has over girls but if they had seen it they loved it and if they didn't they were either crazy or sheltered. I didn't think anyone had ever heard about it. I never seen a poster or ANYTHING. One day at school my Jr year I started singing ''hungry eyes'' almost in a wisper, due to being bored, and after the first line every female in that room were singing along including my Jr year home room teacher. It was great.

Set in 1963 ''baby'' played by Jennifer Grey has been carted away on another holiday to a summer camp in the Catskills. Little does she know that this trip will be 'the time of her life'. As the story goes baby decides to join some merangue classes to pass time. While learning to dance she befriends one of the workers who ends up taking Baby to a party with in the servants quarters. There she meets Johnny a gorgeous, rueful and absolutely gorgeous dance instructor. With him Baby doesnt only learn how to dance but to make love and have fun with. This movie may be corny but it truely is one of the 80's all time greats. It may be for women but it surely is the time of your life.

What more can I say about Dirty Dancing then that of its a beautiful wonderful movie. Its a movie about a young women going to a hotel and finding her true love there. Her father not finding this love very appealing had much to do with what happens between them. I highly recommend this movie to anybody.

I can watch this movie over and over and over again. When the 17 year old Frances 'baby' housemann goes on a summerholiday with her parents and sister she had no idea that she is going to get the time of her life. The songs in the movie are so beautiful especially ''hungry eyes'' i fell in love with this song it's soooo beautiful. Baby and Johnnie are such a good couple. I watched this movie with hungry eyes
