Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
Bolstered by a knockout performance from the perennially underutilized Wesley Snipes, director Gina Prince-Bythwood's adaptation of the popular Terry McMillan novel avoids "you go, girl" clichés to fashion a richer, more serious look at modern urban romance. If anything, Disappearing Acts is a sort of anti-romantic comedy: Price-Bythwood finds a dark undercurrent of regret and desperation in the material, perfectly complemented by the pensive, cautious performances of her two leads. In what could have been another lecherous-boyfriend role, Snipes gives a riveting, sensuous, and utterly convincing turn as the brutish, non-communicative construction worker whose modest ambitions are consistently undermined by his low self-image. In the cushier role of the educated, upwardly mobile striver, Sanaa Lathan finds ways to suggest romantic emptiness and longing without implying that it's impossible for a young woman to achieve both a successful career and a satisfying love life. Even within the confines of made-for-cable cinema, Prince-Bythwood's work is loose and visually assured; she gives the script's conflicts room to breathe -- or fester, as the case may be -- and Snipes and Lahan respond, imbuing every sigh and pregnant pause with added weight and nuance.

    Sweet Movie

Sweet movie. Wesley Snipes is one of my favorite male actors. From the movie, I find that is so much easier to be up front with each other. I would have preferred being friends first, but life is choice.

I read the book before the movie was out. The book is excellent and goes into much more detail.

    A very sweet love story!

Best Movie in a long Time

I think anyone that has or has had a relationship can sympathize with this film. The scenes and the plot was so realistic and wonderfully played by these 2 actors. Sanna Lathan is becoming one of my favorite actresses. She's talented and beautiful. Only a movie this good can make a girl stay up until 3 in the morning crying and laughing alone. I loved it and i would watch it 100x

Outstanding interpertation of ups and downs of true love

I believe this is the BEST Africian American movie put to screen. The actors, the movie, the message (outstanding). Words can not express the depth of graitude in knowing there are performers willing to interpret positive messages in the black community about striving to have something good in life as well as love, this movie has convince me that I can have it all. And thank-you Sanaa for truly representing a size 14 woman in the movie.

    Splendid film

Recorded this off satellite casually at 2am and was blown away by the depth of direction and acting. First class characterisation. First class story line and a sensible black film as well by the way. SANAA LATHAN I love you! even though I prefer you with the extra 20lbs you have in the film. I will see all of her films now. Wesley Snipes does well.
