Overview

The Disneyland theme park was one of Walt Disney's proudest creations, and this special two-DVD set collects four rare episodes of his shows Disneyland and The Wonderful World of Color in which he shows off the crown jewel of his empire. The Disneyland Story, broadcast in 1954, features Disney discussing his new television series, as well as offering a sneak peek at the park, which was still being built at that time. 1955's Dateline Disneyland was a 90-minute live broadcast from the newly opened park, with Ronald Reagan, Irene Dunne, Robert Cummings, Art Linkletter, Fess Parker, and Buddy Ebsen among the celebrities helping Disney introduce the park's attractions to America. Disneyland After Dark, broadcast in 1962, was designed to show off the park's nighttime features (as well as rides and shows that had been added since Disneyland's opening in 1955), and features guest appearances from Annette Funicello, Louis Armstrong, Bobby Rydell, and the Osmond Brothers. And in 1965, The Wonderful World of Color aired The Disneyland Tenth Anniversary Show, which offered a look at some of the newest additions to the park, including the "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride and the "It's a Small World" pavilion. This set is a numbered limited edition packaged in a special metal case, and features introductions from Leonard Maltin.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Those who only know of Walt Disney from jokes about him spinning in his cryogenic chiller will get a sense of his living presence from this remarkable DVD-only collection, which captures the family entertainment impresario greeting the first visitors to his original theme park: "To all who come to this happy place, welcome." This magic-kingdom moment occurs in "Dateline Disneyland," a historic 1955 broadcast included in this warmly nostalgic collection of TV specials that charted the development of Disney's "latest and greatest dream." A black-and-white relic from the golden days of live television, it features Art Linkletter, Robert Cummings, and, yes, future U.S. president Ronald Reagan taking turns as host and guide to the new park's attractions. Also popping in are then-Disney superstars Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen, who turn up in their Davy Crockett and George Russell guises, respectively. This two-disc set also includes "The Disneyland Story," the inaugural episode of Disney's weekly ABC series that takes viewers behind the scenes of the studio and reveals plans for the construction of Disneyland. "Disneyland After Dark," a nocturnal 1962 romp around the park, is a real hoot, with performances by Annette, teen idol Bobby Rydell, the Osmond Brothers (in their TV debut), and Louis Armstrong. "The Disneyland 10th Anniversary Show," a 1965 Wonderful World of Color broadcast, features in-development previews of the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean attractions, as well as a visit to the Tikki Room. Other archival treats include footage of Richard Nixon and family launching the monorail. As host Leonard Maltin notes, cynics might have considered these broadcasts glorified commercials for Disney's far-reaching empire. Today, they are a time-capsule testament to one visionary's extraordinary dream -- which has since come true, and then some.
