Overview

The film that influenced numerous filmmakers and inspired almost countless sequels (including the "official" sequel, 21 years removed and also contained in this package) arrives in a fun, double-disc set that is sure to keep smiles on the faces of avid spaghetti Western fans, and even gives them a chance at the trigger as everyone's favorite coffin-toting cowboy Django. Presented in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.66:1 and enhanced for widescreen TVs (and curiously letterboxed on all sides when viewed on a standard TV), Sergio Corbucci's sadistic Western, restored from a long-missing original negative, looks great. Its murky cinematography complements the muddied "old West" town in which the film takes place, with colors fairly bright and even when needed. Flesh tones are accurate and there is little sign of digital artifacting or debris from the original materials. The English Dolby Digital Mono audio mix is muddled though well balanced, not quite placing the viewer in the action as vividly as one might hope, though it is adequate and serves its purpose fairly well. The same can mostly be said about the quality of the image for Django Strikes Back. Again letterboxed at 1.66:1 and enhanced for 16 x 9 TVs, the never-before-seen, five-and-a-half minute prologue is of horrid quality -- grainy and extremely blurred (almost to the point of uncomfortably straining viewers' eyes). Once the prologue ends, the image becomes dramatically more clear and sharp, showing little signs of artifacting, with accurate colors and skin tones and a clean transfer. Presented in English or Italian Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround, the audio is markedly more fulfilling than that of its predecessor, suitably emphasizing gunplay, music, and voices, and adding an extra dimension of detail to a satisfying mix. Extra features include two nostalgic interviews with Django (Franco Nero), who recalls getting the role by chance after someone had already been cast, the loose methods of filmmaking and black humor of director Corbucci, the concepts of a South American Western employed in Django Strikes Back, and working with the late Donald Pleasance and Christopher Connelly. Theatrical trailers, talent bios, and a point-and-shoot interactive Django game round out the disc's special features. A collectible booklet discusses the influence of the original film and comprehensively details the over 50 unofficial sequels.
