Overview

A production from the Het Musietheater in Amsterdam in June 2007 and directed for television by its librettist/director Peter Sellars, Doctor Atomic is John Adams' and Peter Sellars' fifth work in almost 20 years of artistic collaboration. Doctor Atomic features a superb cast, including Canadian baritone Gerald Finley, who created the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer and has made it his signature. The luminous soprano Jessica Rivera performs the role of Kitty Oppenheimer, a part originally conceived for the late mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. Anthony Tommasini called Ms. Rivera, "a radiant lyric soprano... in a vulnerable and intense portrayal." Other cast members include Eric Owens, Richard Paul Fink, James Maddalena, Thomas Glenn, Jay Hunter Morris, and Ellen Rabiner. Doctor Atomic received its world premiere at the San Francisco Opera on October 1, 2005.Composer John Adams authored this distinctly modern opera, commissioned and mounted by The San Francisco Opera in conjunction with De Nederlandse Opera and The Lyric Opera of Chicago, and helmed for the stage by the controversial Peter Sellars. Written and performed entirely in English, it weaves the tale of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the detonation of the first atomic bomb outside of Los Alamos, New Mexico. Gerald Finley stars as Oppenheimer; Jessica Rivera as his wife, Kitty; and Eric Owens as General Leslie Groves. Those with strong stomachs should be forewarned that the program incorporates graphic images of wartime carnage.
